We at times stay behind pubs and of course have meals and patronise the bar. We can easily spend $150/$200 on dinner and drinks. We thoroughly enjoy yakking to the publicans and locals. I have noticed however an increasing number of pubs are starting to charge $10 or more pn irrespective of whether you dine there or not. I cd understand if you were connected to their power but these are no power no water overnighters. Perhaps charge $10 and give them a redeemable ticket off their meal tab? To me its like pulling into a pub for a beer and being charged to park in the carpark. What do the GNs think?

I suspect this is a typical case of killing the goose which lays the golden egg.

I have to agree with Mike H.
Too many people with short arms and very long pockets.
Unfortunately they ruin it for the rest of us.
Cant blame the publican.

Unfortunately there are always those who want something for nothing, and in my travels I have seen both sides. As you say, it is easy to spend $100 in the pub, and that's fine as the publican has made a couple of dollars and you've been fed and watered, so to speak! But many times I have seen travellers park their $200,000 setups in the pub's grounds, raise the Sat TV, use the showers and toilets, then disappear back into their van, emerging only after dark to top-up their water tanks, stay the night and simply drive off in the morning as if that is their God given right to do so. This is not in the spirit of things and these low-lifes spoil it for the rest of us. Some of the pubs I've stayed at don't usually offer overnight camping but I've found that when I'm asked, after a few beers, "Another one Mate" and I reply that I'd better be moving on as I don't like to drink and drive often they'll say "Just park out the back Mate. No worries". Everybody's a winner! The idea of a redeemable ticket that can be used for meals or drinks is a good one, and is something I've raised at a couple of clubs, but I've been told that although they've looked into it there are all sorts of legal complications such as 24 hour access to toilets? How true this is I do not know (or care) but I'm sure some of our legal eagles will give this comment DMax attention. Seems like a "win win" situation but probably too simple to be universally accepted. However, I can't agree with your analogy of being charged to park in the pub carpark when you simply stop for a beer. If you do stop for a beer, you then become a customer of the pub, with the carpark being a necessary part of that business, but if you simply use the carpark for your own purposes, without buying anything, you're just a bludger. This sort of activity is akin to stealing toilet rolls and liquid soap. Low-lifes.Cheers

Probably worth the $10pn for those too scared to spend the night out in the bush by themselves or for those who constantly crave human company.
We used to do a bit of pub camping at times, towards the end of it, it seemed to us that some country folk are growing tired of a steady stream of city slickers calling in with their expensive, highly polished rigs.
One of the last ones we stayed at was Toompine, Outback QLD.
The publican was peed off because he'd told one city couple the location of his secret pristine Red Claw spot.
Within a few years it was fished out & trampled to death.

When in Blackall we choose to stay at the Barcoo Hotel, it has about 12 caravan sites, with power and water(all be it bore water), dump point, showers and toilets. Stay for I think it was $30 a night, stay a week $120.
If your fussy then you better not stay there, at 10am Mon to Fri the fire up the big genny and then around 6pm fire up a 2nd genny that powers the kitchen, around 8 both are switched off and they revert to mains power, weekends its all mains power. Sunday morning at 6am a semi turns up it a mobile fruit and vege shop with lots of other offerings, about 11 it packs up and goes somewhere else.
You dont see many that camp down on the common in the bar or restaurant, most nights there was up to 80 vans down there.
