Probably just me but I cant find where I can book seats on the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin. I realise you cant just waltz up to the ticket office and buy same but the only things I get when Googling is these 5/6/7 day Package Tours costing thousand of $$$$$$$, side trips to Uluru, 2 days in Alice Springs etc. We just want to do our own thing - any advice appreciated. Thanks

A long time ago we did Sydney to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific, upgraded to beds. Then the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs. Then a 4wd tour around the various pebbles & gorges.
So glad we upgraded to beds on the first leg. The second leg we stayed in the seats. They are horrible, an absolutely exhausting experience.
We have now done the same thing in our car. So much better. You can do everything at your own pace. All the main roads are sealed.
Not to forget you do not see a thing in the outback at night from the train so you miss out on all the scenery for the bulk of the train trip.
I would only do the train trip for the train trip itself in first class if you are a train enthusiast. Beyond that forget about it.

We'd go stir crazy crossing the continent on a train.
We did a luxury 3 week Trafalgar Tours coach trip around England, Wales, Ireland & Scotland, it nearly drove us up the wall.
A day sailing to Tassie was like watching paint dry.
Agree with Whenarewethere that going by road would be far better.
We did the Ghan Expedition Adelaide to Darwin 4 days 3 nights plus 3 nights in Darwin with return Flights to Adelaide a couple of years ago for from Memory $3500 each, setup by a local Travel company deal ( they signed up 12 couples for their great price).
At Darwin free stay at a 4 star Hotel with trips on the Harbour and Darwin's War Memorial site ( The surround sound and dive bombers coming in from overhead was impressive)
The Dinner under the stars, will always remember it along with a ride on a camel with SWMBO. Also did the side trips.
Definitely recommend it.

I sorta think the posta wants to do the train trip, not hear what others want to do. Friends have done it, had a great time, we will do it one day. Will be a change from driving up and back, which we've done sooooooooo many times, maybe the posta feels the same???? good luck,

You beat me to it, Mike! There are many more knowledgeable individuals posting on this site, although it is clear that we do have at least one member who is consistently negative. As for The Ghan Train, just by Googling "Cheapest Fares on Ghan, Adelaide to Darwin" I easily found these current fares to choose from, easily booked online if the OP wishes. Seems that cheapest time to travel is now.Hope this is useful. Cheers

I will post what I want to post thankyou, what, were you banned from them, sour grapes maybe.?
Its just another forum if the poster can't get a sensible answer on here, which is highly likely after your informative response.

Sorry, but I'm confused. Today, at 2.47pm, I posted both the current fare structure and the contact details for the purchase of tickets. Other than actually booking and paying for the tickets there is little more that I could have done to assist the OP,who last visited the forum at 4.46pm today. If there is some way that you believe that I could have been more helpful, please advise. Cheers

I normally like to stay out of these spats but I have to pick up on this ....
Wanda, earlier you said ... "I sorta think the posta wants to do the train trip, not hear what others want to do"
And then in the same post you proceed to tell us all how you have have driven it "sooooooooo many times". Wow! I'm impressed. I am sure Giggleswick is as well. Then when Yobarr posts very useful information that answers the question, your helpful input is .....???

It is a problem when you have provided a link and Yobarr has screenshot the information but we still have someone who feels the need to direct the OP to another forum just in case this forum hasnt provided the information.
It is hard to believe at times
There is only so many times the answer can be provided.

Maybe the members of CF are more intelligent than us but I doubt it?
Despite a few lively debates on GNF overall its a better place to be than CF.
I unsubscribed as I was being stalked by two trolls.

I agree, not necessarily smarter but less toxic.
Most people who post on here, trying to get help or whatever it is, the point is, there are several on here, who post ALL the time and they seem to think they know everything about anything and before tooo long they start with their smartarse comments towards other people with different ideas.
You don't get that same toxic response on the "other" forum mentioned..........in my opinion!
I think several of these baffoons(no name mentioned) feel they own and run this forum, and, at times I think they do.
And then you have all their little, emphasis on Little, lapdogs who run around like that bugs bunny cartoon, with the big bad bulldog swaggering down the street with his little sidekick bouncing around trying to impress him, pathetic!
Cheers
