Im about to get a 600kg GVM upgrade and 2" lift on a 2008 79 series single cab Landcruiser ute.
As part of the inspection it needs to be weighed and have been told it needs to be taken back to stock....removal of canopy, dog crate, water tank/pump, under tray draws, fridge, tools, solar panels.....absolutely everything.
Ive been told the lighter I can get it the better........why is this? Surely a 600kg upgrade is exactly that......600kg above the standard manufacturers GVM? (not getting into axle weights, just GVM)
Is it to do with the height? Would there concern be ,If they measure it loaded , lift it 2" and then I unload it it would be over height?
They're telling me its to do with weight, but I cant see how???
I've already got to swap my tyres to 265 70R16, from 265 75R16 because of an approximate 15mm difference so Im wondering if height not weight is the problem

Which Australian state are you talking about here Sean? When I got mine done I simply dropped the car at the workshop, they did the work, and I drove it out. Had to take a couple of papers to Motor Registry to have details updated. Can't see why you'd need to lower your tare. As you say, GVM is GVM. Could I ask what is your reason for GVM upgrade? I did mine simply so I can legally run at 6800kg GCM, legal on all axles. Cheers

Hmmm, sounds odd to me, & like you I don't think it makes sense. If it were me I'd be looking at perhaps a different mob to do the job who have a better understanding or at least seek a second opinion.
I got our Patrol leaf sprung cab chassis with canopy upgraded from 3400kg to 3900kg about 9 years ago. They wanted me to keep all the stuff I had in the car for daily use when doing it - so not the full touring weight (close to GVM), but definitely not as light as possible.
I also changed to 265/75R16's at that time as these had a higher load capacity, & could be run at lower pressure than the 245's which were on the car when I bought it from Telstra. I was advised to make this change by the workshop doing the GVM upgrade.
Rules may be different over in the west & may also have changed since I had mine done (in Vic).

Was hoping you'd be in Queensland as could have given you a contact! Anyway, as Cuppa says, I'd be looking for a different place to do your upgrade as when I got mine done I had all sorts of stuff on board. Could be worthwhile sending a PM to Greg1 as he lives in WA and knows a lot about weights etc so he may have contacts and suggestions? Unlikely that it'll be anything to do with height.Good luck, and let us know how you get on. Cheers.

Maybe they have to re - weigh for a Tare figure to put on the new Compliance Plate .......KB

Probably a bit late now Sean, but a 3780kg GVM upgrade wont cost you $5000+, as all that's needed is a small amount of work to allow combining of the standard factory axle ratings of 1480kg and 2300kg. Mine cost waaaaay less than the $5000+ that you're likely paying. Gives 480kg extra carrying capacity but doesn't increase GCM, which stays at 6800kg. However, the GVM upgrade means that the GCM can actually be reached. Looking forward to hearing your outcome. Cheers

I recently had a GVM upgrade to my Nissan patrol. Raised GVM from 3080 to 3505.
I was advised to get mine weighed and to do it as light as possible, next to no fuel and consider removing heavy rear drawers. For the life of me cant remember the reason why. Perhaps a seniors moment.
My upgrade cost me $5000 in NSW.
Couldnt do anything about cost as this was only company doing it without very long distance travel. Someone suggested I go to Lovells, but they dont do my vehicle.
Will stay tuned for the light weight weighing reason.
Good luck.

Not a car but my son had his near new van upgraded in SA and the engineer needed a new tare weight note prior to him approving the van.
There was nothing modified as it was a van that could have originally left the factory with the upgrade but because my son bought it off the showroom floor so to speak he had to tare it again even though he asked for and got a weigh note on the day of delivery.
He had to empty the van to achieve the new registration approval and the new specification plate.
The engineer stated that he wanted no part of any dodgy figure that the manufacturer claimed was the tare.
I guess it is called crossing the *Ts* and dotting the *Is*
