Returned from Qld a month ago and went through Sydney on the M2 and M5, we looked at the website to do a toll calculation beforehand and it told us around $16 for the trip to the motorways via Pennant Hills Road.
I was shocked to see on my Linkt account that I have been charged $39.78 for the single trip.
Spoke to Linkt, they say in NSW the tolls are charged on length of the vehicle so I was charged as if a truck due to the combined length of my car and van. Not the same as home in Vic. where we are charged the car fee only, ie, it would have been $16.

That cheap compared to a few years back when it was around $72, but I never use the toll roads.
I turn off the Hume motorway near Campbelltown to Narellan where I turn right on to the Camden Valley Way, Cowpasture Rd to A28 Cumberland Hwy /Pennant Hill Rd to the Pacific Motorway. Only downside is Cumberland Hwy can be a bit of a carpark during the day, thats why we plan our journey to be on a Sundays

Same problem with motorhomes on M2/M7 only it is height that justifies charging truck rates. I am convinced it is a total ripoff! I am grateful I do not have to commute on a daily basis like so many in the workforce.

The criteria for being slugged at heavy vehicle rates is either of:
Vehicles over 2.8 metres in height
Vehicles over 12.5 metres in length (comibined length)
Travelling from M1 to Hume Highway the current rate is about $22 for Class A vehicles. If your rig dimensions exceed either of those figures it is triple the rate, or just over $66. The most expensive section, and easiest to avoid is the North Connex tunnel ... the first part of the system when travelling from the north. Bypassing this section and using Pennant Hills Rd saves $26 at the heavy vehicle rate and only takes 5-10 minutes longer.
NSW residents with a toll account can claim the excess charges back, making the M2 and M7 at around $15 a no brainer in my opinion. Just go in the middle of the day for a fast easy run and motorway all the way. Travellers from other states, not such a clear decision if the van would trigger those charges. Depends on how you value the ease of travel.

In the beginning they use to charge on number of axles. Car + Caravan = 8 axles.
Yes definitely rip off. Bunch of thieves. But if you are not familiar with the area it
becomes too difficult to use non-toll roads.

Sorry you feel that way but, we are quite happy with his performance over here and I think he will around for a tad longer yet. Anyhow should you change your mind we will still welcome you here to our "no toll" roads state

Transurban is the largest Tollroad operator in NSW and Victoria. Just had a read where they claim the prices are effectivley set by State Govts when they present a case to build a new road. But some how they get a handy 4-5% minimum increase even when inflation was low.

I'm more than happy to pay the tolls to be able to drive heavy vehicle right through Sydney without having to stop for 87 traffic lights - and that doesn't take into consideration what the situation would be if there were no toll roads at all.

Isnt it bloody marvellous how gumbiments sneak past their commitments and add taxes and charges
Wherever they can get past opposition from the long suffering public.
The fuel tax was initiated to cover road works.
Why has that money been hyjacked by gumbiments to other purposes and tollways ben imposed on
Roads that are already paid for by the enormous amounts of fuel tax!!!!
As fuel prices rise the tax zooms with it. Obviosly theres no incentive to keep fuel at minimum costs.
Bloody dishonest ripoff by stinking lousy self serving dicks in public office.
Bugger em I say.

Brodie your just a little off the mark our fuel taxes dont pay for those road, the majority of the money come private investment to build toll roads.
Secondly the new national govt was quick to reimpose the full fuel excise tax, which you rightly is supposed to go to roads, but by cricky by gingo dr jimmey wants to get his hands on it for other things useless feel good crap. And what little he hands over to the states who pissit against the wall, whilst letting our country roads turn into pot hole heaven.

No private investment no multi lane highways, yep WA has a pissant population of 2.6 million compared to NSW 8.1 million, Dont brag about your roads The GCR is a goat track, alas the Goldfields Highway is no picnic the last time I was on it.

Gundog, old Cobber, you really need to get up to date. The GCH (or as we call it "Australia's Greatest Shortcut") is about to be sealed. And there are no plans, on the WA side anyway, to introduce a Toll on it. However, really glad to hear you have previously visited us and I will see what I can to have your displeasure about the Goldfield Hwy seen to. Surely then you will come over

There is also another what I believe could be called a "brown paper bag" issue. When the government of the day gives the go-ahead to build roads these companies pay the government a fee.
When Sydney's Lane Cove tunnel (opened 2007) was built the builder paid in the vicinity of $60 million to be allowed to build the tunnel.
I did hear somewhere that if the government waved the $60m fee for Lane Cove tunnel the company would build a third lane.
No, the government wanted the cash for elections.

That is almost correct. NSW Tolls are charged on the length AND HEIGHT of the vehicle and it is the height that typically catches motorhome owners as we are often over 2.8m. Why there is a height restriction is beyond me. I would have thought length (space taken up on the road) and weight (long term damage to the road) would be important. Attached are the definitions off the NSW govt web site.
I think we should raise a petition to govt to get it changed. Has anyone thought of or done that yet? I am happy to give it a go. I would suggest the petition be that motorhomes are to be included in the recreational vehicle rebate scheme. What do others think?

I was charged semi trailer rates travelling in one direction and charged caravan rates returning to Qld early this year. I rang and complained. A Russian sounding female spoke to me and was unable to understand what I was complaining about. So, I wrote a review on Google about them. It wasn't complimentary. 2 Weeks later the toll excess was refunded. I guess I was lucky but I won't be travelling that toll road in NSW again.

Just on the subject of tolls and ripoffs. There are scams at the moment where a demand for an unpaid toll is sent by text to your phone. It is a copy of a genuine demand but is not specific for your car. DO NOT REPLY OR CICK ON THE PAY NOW LINK. The advice is to delete it. https://www.linkt.com.au/help/security/about-scams/melbourne
The one I saw was for a small toll, only $5.90 but saying a penalty of $500 if not paid within a couple of days. Reference number but no rego number or specific day, with a pay now link which went to a credit card pay form. Hmm bastards. Where did they get his mobile number from.
