I recall putting a similar warning here last year for Townsville but the plague is increasing dramatically. LOCK up your goodies securely, don't take chances with your keys.
In yesterday's Tnsv Bulletin was the sad story of a Tasmania tourist who had flown up to see his son & hired a car. I don't know the details but his hire car was stolen by some "Kiddy crims". They took off, driving erratically through several suburbs, rammed a police car & eventually torched the car behind Office Works. The result - he has lost his bags & has a $5,000 insurance company bill.
These kids aged 9 to 15 are even spreading their skills to Brisbane - that's even upsetting the Premier. Most cities - from Toowoomba to Cairns & out to Mt Isa are suffering this scourge. Last year a chap was hooking his caravan chains up before heading off. He made the mistake of leaving his engine running - a kid jumped in & took off with the lot - for 100m until he rolled both the caravan & LandCruiser when he took the first corner too fast!
They don't care, they get free cars from victims, free fuel in drive offs, free house breaking tools courtesy of Bunnings & have the senior police keeping their cars off the streets, fearing more vehicle damage.
Beware!

Hi WAWT,
I think you need to bring your self up to speed as far as how these out of control cretans are getting these cars.
Apart from how Warren above described above these @r$holes are breaking into homes and terrorising people or just breaking in and finding key fobs for cars.
They are skilled opportunists who prey on the basic and natural inattention of those unwary shoppers at car parks and service stations.
These organised gangs have a lot of the police force bluffed through the use of mobile cameras and cries of racism.
These people have the unfortunate support of some media outlets and various community groups.
I dont mention this to start a debate but more to indicate that those who terrorised and stole belongings and a car and are found and arrested are generally free to head out onto our streets and properties to do this same thing again in a couple of days time. A news report of an arrest really is of little value when it comes to the public expecting a favourable result.
It appears that the towns in NQ have just stood by and suffered these crimes without any REAL law enforcement being carried out mainly due to the old race card claiming lack of opportunity poor education, you know you have heard it all time after time and if not involving Townsville then it is another regional Australian town. I mention this purely for the reason of explanation to those who may suffer at the hands of these perpetrators as quite often they will be back so be extremely aware of their ability to retaliate. This is not something fabricated by me but has been information relayed by a police officer in the area.
These gangs have KILLED innocent people and are feared.
I have friend that need to travel to Townsville and at time Mackay and they are fearful to go to shopping centres service stations or even Hospital Car Parks.
To put this in balance the majority of us AUSTRALIANS live by our laws, put in place by our governments who were put in place by our people and these rogue groups are breaking those laws because they have a mamby pampy doo gooding so and sos who seem to need to recreate events of 270 years ago to provide this MINORITY of law breakers the right to just be released to re offend. ( This is why this is happening ) and this may not be fullyy realised by those from the southern states where these examples of blatant law breaking are not happening or more likely pale into insignificance due to the huge population and the way the media present news in those cities.
@Warren,
I cringed the other day when I witnessed a police patrol being so intimidated that they had to retreat initially to their vehicle and then scarper in that vehicle back to the police station.
It would be a safe bet that that gang responsible is still out there terrorising all of us.
As Warren has warned, it is coming up to the southerner influx and these criminal gangs arent isolated to Townsville and Mackay they are in every town now including the Whitsundays at times.
If I may issue another caution to travellers.
Be extremely aware when driving on the Bruce Highway as one of their favourite pass times is to home invade, steal cars, steal fuel and then race from Tville to Bowen or Mackay for thrills.
They drive like absolute lunatics with no regard for anyones safety. Some have actually killed other and themselves.
Many a journey regularly reveals these actions and from personal experience and they are frightening. For example on coming traffic means nothing to these cretans, even heavy trucks. One of these miscreants forced a truck as far left against a cutting and hit the truck which resulted in a death.
The Bruce Highway from Mackay to Townsville is dotted with wrecked cars which have been the result of these thefts.
So from my observation be very aware that even something like a handbag snatch or an aussalt for pocket contents quite often results in the theft of a vehicle as the key fob. While WAWT and some others may think fobs are secure it is only offers security when not easily accessible to thieves and be aware it is your phones wallets and anything else of value that they will take to top up their already quite good Centrelink payment that many of them collect for searching for a job or some other fabricated lame excuse that we all just seem to hand out Willy Nilly.
I have not seen any figures YET on an increased numbers of caravan break ins but they are there and reported and they arent beyond using quite threatening measures of violence to get your key fob.
A very timely warning from Warren with the hoards of southern folk arriving in the north during the next couple of months.
I might ask at this time of this being a WARNING TO TRAVELLERS is that this situation is real and if this topic is turned into wether we adopt certain policies is not the point. I ask Cindy to moderate this topic so as to only reflect the need and reason for the topic so that the current threats are clearly indicated to those ubsuspecting travellers. It would be terrible to have a report such as this removed because it becomes lost in the diatribe of what we as a country of Australians have all done wrong.
Thank you.

Well written Rick, and a timely reminder...thanks Warren. These times are a little unprecedented really, sure there has always been petty crime but is escalating to levels unseen in this country.
We are traveling North to Townsville and then West across to Katherine and then over over to Broome in a couple of weeks time...we will be very very aware of our security at all times...thanks guys.

Hi Rick, I think I can hear the sounds of the Flak cannons being calibrated, closely followed by a thread closure. For the record what you say is supported by the Townsville police therefore we can assume that what they say is correct. What to do about it is another matter. Warren and your good self are quite right to bring this to the attention of any of our members who may be travelling that way.

I live in a Whitsunday Caravan Park, and regurally travel from the Whitsundays to Mackay and Brisbane via the Bruce Highway.
Yes there are numerous dumped vehicles on the Bruce Highway.
I have not seen nor heard of the criminal activity you have described occuring in the whitsundays particually the caravan park we live in, yet I do recall an incident a while back driving in the manner described. The individual was in a stolen car and managed to kill himself after he took out another vehicle just out of Proserpine.
Law and Order in an increasing issue in northern Australia, but its the Dorothy and Donny Do Gooder who live in affluent suburbs of the southern cities that have created the problem.
If I spoke about how I actually feel, my comments would be deleted, the thread would be closed and I would be banned forever.

A quote advising attempts to slow a burglary is not what this topic is about.
Many visitors to the NQ and other areas are staying in rented accomodation, caravans and the like.
But you did really miss my point. Even when you partially quoted me you appear not to comprehend what I said particularly without other points I had indicated.
I am pleased you are safe in Manly.

No denying the problem, but Rick I think your commentary is designed to whip up a real problem into something bigger. An excuse to have a go in the knowledge that you will get support. This is the stuff of vigilantism & does nothing to help. It reads as though you are wetting your pants at the opportunity to say what you've said & it's not the first time.
My view, FWIW & without any expectation that anyone will agree is that it is a symptom of a far larger & intractable problem which is not at all difficult to trace back to the ways in which aboriginal people have been treated & are still treated in Australia. The behaviours in question are totally unacceptable but simplistic retributionist solutions are never going to be a solution & largely just serve to reinforce the polarisation they intend to create.
That is all I have to say, you'll no doubt be pleased to read, as you have indicated that you don't wish to start a debate.
My reason for not wishing to say more is that I don't believe a racially respectful debate on this matter is a possibility here.
So I make my point & leave it at that.
The term you have used to describe these young people who are engaging in dangerous & criminal behaviour is not the derogatory term you intend - unless you believe they are Greek.

It would be hard for it to become bigger this side of civil war. If this were in Melbourne the news would comprise nothing else.
And I think your comments are always designed to absolve Aboriginal people from responsibility for their actions which is patronising and disempowering.

Perhaps if caning really was on the cards, parents of these youngsters might step in and take some responsibility for their child's actions. Not hard to do and very effective.

Sensitive subject it seems...let's never forget what happened to poor Bill Leak for daring to reveal a sad truth of Parenting in this country by way of a cartoon...as Cartoonists often do.
Revealing or speaking truths has never been to incite any sort of prejudice or vigilante...but merely to raise awareness and to look for a solution...so how can exposing the truth behind a serious matter as a Poster here has be considered by some to be stirring up trouble?
Until some one in Power actually steps up and takes the lead, popular or not, in handling these matters I cannot see any improvement ever. Of course the good old Qld Government reckons they can solve the problem of the increasing numbers of Juvenile crime by raising the age at which a child can be convicted of a crime...seriously?
