We are from Adelaide and we are just starting to plan a big trip to the East Coast. We plan to head just north of Sydney and then make our way up the coast. We will have approx. 6 weeks maybe a little longer if weather is good to travel along the coast. We plan to go in September/October next year. We hope to stay 4 or 5 nights before moving on to the next spot and slowly make our way up the coast. We haven't travelled that part of Aust. before and we would like some tips on the best caravan parks to stay in as regards to position and scenery. We prefer smallish parks but must have power available and cater for 2 very well behaved poodles. If you have any "must do" activities on our trip, we would also welcome any suggestions. In fact, any tips would be VERY welcome!

Here is a few caravan parks we have stayed in over the years on the coast between Sydney and the border.
Toowoon Bay, ask if there is any deals, we use this park when visiting family in the area.
Stockton over the river from Newcastle city, a ferry ride.
Forster, join Reflections Caravan Parks, good deals, right near the bridge. A beautiful picturesque coastal area.
Port Macquarie near the break water.
Nambucca, near the head of the river.
Stuarts Point Reflections, very relaxing.
Mylestom Reflection, short walk onto the beach. Lots of good drives from here to interesting places.
Coastal strip can be the high end of caravan parks. Most of these we have enjoyed for a few nights and if the need arises we would go back but be prepared with a good budget

An alternative to the Stuarts Point CP is the nearby Grassy Head CP. Smaller and feels more like a bush camp than a CP. Fires are allowed, Admittedly it's not on the estuary and no commerce close by, but it's not far from Grassy Head to Stuarts Point if you need commerce.

Im tired of the east coast Highway . I go north via Mudgee , Newel , Leichhardt highways . From Blue mountains / Lithgow then north .

Instead of going straight up the MI from Sydney and bypassing Newcastle take the Pacific Hwy exit onto the old Pacific Hwy through eastlakes i.e. Swansea, Belmont. Stay at the Belmont Holiday Park it is a point of land that juts out into the lake and is a very popular spot with tourists (its pet friendly). Swansea Caravan Park is also good but unfortunately does not allow pets. Belmont is on the lake, close to surfing beaches, golf course, licenced clubs, pubs and restaurants also good to use as a base to explore Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area, the lower Hunter vineyards (40 minutes), Port Stephens (1hr) etc. Newcastle city (20 mins) also 10 minutes from major shopping complexes in Charlestown, Glendale and Kotara. The Warners Bay Foreshore is a great place for meals, coffee or doing a foreshore walk. Suggest if you decide to stay in Belmont book early it can be hard park to get into depending on the time of year.
