Welcome to the forum. Whilst I have had little experience with that engine for some years, I will say that alongside your 175kw V6 it will feel like a slug, at only 110kw. BUT it'll go forever and serve you well. Fuel economy was great towing a 1000 litre (?) fuel tanker to fuel our excavators etc. Cheers

Hi Micky
I'll try to compare that Hilux with my new model Kia Sportage nq5 diesel to help answer your question.
Kia 137kw 430nm. Hilux 110kw 400nm torque. Both turbo diesel. Gearbox Kia 8 speed torque converter auto, hilux 6 speed manual. Kerb weight Kia 1750kg, hilux 1800kg, I'm towing 1700kg van atm, you 1200kg. Economy towing 1700kg Kia 12-13 L/100km. Hilux towing 1200kg likely similar. Diesel more expensive than petrol. Hilux more economical than your v6 when not towing also.
Our Kia tows our van effortlessly so I think you'll have no issues and you won't lose power with an automatic transmission.

Welcome to the Forum Micky.
Be aware that the weight of the van is only half the problem with fuel economy. The wind resistance is a major factor, as is speed.
Driving methodology has a major role in determining overall fuel usage.
The Hilux is basically as good as it gets for a utility, remembering that diesel is now selling at 10/20 per litre above the prices of petrol.

There won't be any issues towing with a 2.4L diesel.
In UK a lot of Land Rover Freelander owners tow up to about 1800kg (car car tow 2000kg). The diesel turbo engine is 2.2L 430nm in 110 & 140kW versions.
They are all very happy with towing characteristics.
I personally don't tow & also have a petrol engine. There is a massive difference in headwind & tailwind fuel consumption. Also stick to 90kph if you are not irritating people behind.
