I am intending to take my Pajero and 18 Ft van from Kuranda to Cairns. I have driven it once without a van and remember it as being very steep. Is it advisable to do this with a van or is there an alternative route that I should be considering.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum Coburg - Your Pajero will eat all the ups and downs, just do it.

Our daughter lives in Speewah, 10 minutes from Kuranda, so I've travelled up and down the range a number of times while visiting her.
I wouldn't say it was particulary steep....it does have a few tight turns you will need to take care. Trucks use it all the time.
I will be in our Pajero and 17 ft van in July and will be using that road.....I have no hesitation....just be careful and you will be OK.

You are in the wrong state, try NSW for Carinda out near Walgett, Lighting Ridge area

Also watch the speed camera on the bottom half of the trip, though I think you will be taking it easy

Hi Coberg,
Keep in the appropriate gear, and you will have no problems.

If in doubt, you can always go further north & come down via Julatten & Mossman

That road is one of the better ones over the range.
Easy peasey. Just select low gear at the top and travel slowly.
Done it with a 3 tonne van on the back of the Ranger and was a cake walk compared to a couple of others we have done.
