My question is to the van travellers already up in North Queensland?
I wonder if the Mexicans ( Vannies) from the south are packing out a lot of free /low cost / bush camps.
We intend to leave mid-June for the winter in the Sun in North Queensland. We are leaving a lot later than we had planned.
More interested in the comments from the travellers already up in N.Q.?

Because I stay in places for long periods at a time these days and currently about to start a house sit in NSW, I'm a Mexican Co..roach Normally at this time of the year I'm a Cane toad.

We are on our way south, its been quiet up north but in the past couple of weeks have really seen the numbers increase. Going by the amount we are now seeing heading north the exodus is now really underway, by mid June I expect the numbers will be a huge amount more than they were last week or what they are now.

Just thinking - This time last year we, from Queensland, were getting organized to head to Victoria for our holidays to look at the silo art. Are we still grey nomads as we no longer have our motorhome and stay in motels? A lot has happened in the last 12 months. Sorry Jay&Dee I got side tracked from your thread. Love going to FNQ when Winter here in Vic.
I stay away from the coastal areas and spend most times between Mitchell to Longreach to Winton and other towns in those regions.
Free camps/Donation camps only.
Next year another half-lap to Darwin/Cooktown and back home to Vic.
Enjoy your travels Jay&Dee and soak up the sun.

I can assure you that the Minimum temps. in those regions will be anywhere between zero and 10 degrees.
Maybe it is a different cold up here v Victoria's cold.
But Dicko the bonus is those warm sunny daytime experiences.
The winter east of the Great Divide is a mild one compared to the regions on the west side of the Great Divide.
Just from my experience and being a boy from outback Qld.

I have not been up there for a few years. When I was wintering up there, the Mexicans were packing out the caravan parks. It was the coc*roaches that were infesting the freebies.

Well all of you "imports", we're not going anywhere at the moment as Pat recovers after major surgery.
From what I can decipher a "Mexican" can be someone who lives across the border, be it either the state border or the Tropic of Capricorn. Qld seems to be the state for nicknames a plenty. We've been here for nearly 37 years (next month). Dick0, don't let the term upset you as Qld need travellers to feed its tourist industry. Unfortunately I'm close to becoming a "Banana Bender" because of those years here!
However - a WARNING - I read in the ABC News this morning that it's getting the reputation of being the "traffic camera" state! Beware of odd looking yellow boxes with all sorts of stuff hanging off them!! Our Govt (out the door in 24(?)) is broke & is using the motorists as a cash cow. These portable camera trailers are watching the use of mobile phones while driving - even having a phone on your thighs can see you losing $1100; speeding, not wearing seat belts. They have a special camera for road works impeachments - beware of these big yellow boxes!
And another speed camera is being installed in School crossing signs.
So people enjoy your trip north - just be wary of not supporting our government with your hard to come by funds!

Warren, If one is worried about losing money by being fined for making a traffic infringement, I would think that the way to avoid loss of money via fines is to obey the traffic laws. No outgoing money to the government coffers then. Maybe less road carnage and hospital costs too.
People winge about getting a fine from camera. Would they winge as much if a real police person caught them making an infringement? Maybe they might not break the traffic law if they thought that a live copper would see them. So why do they think that they can break a law which had been imposed to try to saves lives, when a camera is involved? Or maybe they think the law that is trying to save lives is incorrect? Harsh penalties are trying to act as deterrent. Harsh deterrents seem ok for youth crime but not traffic violations, is that correct?

Warren, NSW has Govt has their hand in the motorist's pocket for years, Red Light cameras with the added speed camera at just about every corner. Massive speeding fines generated from "Point to Point" cameras. Toll roads aplenty, that charge a car and caravan at B Double rate - a trip from one side of Sydney to the other costing just shy of $100.00.
Ned Kelly was a gentleman in comparison.

Some general information for those of you intending to head north.
It has been raining since Xmas in FNQ and everything has either drowned or turned green with mould. I kid you not,we are totally sick of the weather.
Oh, and by the way, Longreach has never been in Far North Queensland. That's the Central West, It starts north of Cardwell on the Wet Tropics Coast.
Cairns is just about due North of Cunamulla

All I was doing was explaining that here in North Qld there are more cameras than I've seen elsewhere (having recently travelled through NSW, Vic & SA).
These mobile ones are quite sneaky - YES, everyone should obey the road rules & ensure that we all arrive to our destinations safely. And as far as road works go, yes something has to be done when there are people working there. Our speed limit is generally 40kph though these works - whether there are people working there or not.
Most of our intersections have been fitted with something that is encased in a blue glass - no I don't think they are burglar security cameras but I haven't found what they do yet.
I had a "near miss" one night a few months ago with a mobile unit when I pulled well off the road & used my mobile phone to look something up. I heard a strange noise - a repetitive zapping sound & finally worked out that it was a camera device that was positioned near where I was parked. I later found out that I should have turned the engine off as well as my lights - but luckily no $1100 fine came in the mail!
I did read of an apprentice electrician being photographed recently when he had his phone resting on his leg - he got the $1100 fine. The phone has to be placed where the driver cannot reach it!
Ben Taxl - can you send some of that rain down here please? We are in the Dry Tropics but .......

Dicko, diversion was not my intention. I live south of Cairns with a good view of the Bruce Goat Track and it seems to me that there is just about an equal number of Caravans etc. moving south as there is north. Maybe the weather has nothing to do with this bi-directional migration.
