In that I've very new to this forum, I've been reading many profiles and many old posts. I can't help but notice how many people put their full name, date of birth and town they are from. In some pictures I've seen their reggo. To me, this screams of 'leaving too much personal info' out on the web.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm always a bit fearful that someone can get that info and use it in the wrong way. It really takes nothing to become a member on here. One does not even need to post anything and they can see anyone's personal profile they created.
Me personally, I would not advertise that my name is John Doe and that I'm from Maintown SA and that I'm away on a holiday. One only needs to go to www.whitepages.com.au and type in your surname and town and bobs your uncle. I know you're away and presumably the house is empty.

Hmm - interesting thinking gordon- don't really know what I think of your observations, but it is a sorry state of affairs when we start to distrust everyone we come in contact with - especially on the web. Wonder what the reactions will be to your post.

I agree with Gordon 100% myself.
Its the web, not everyone is that trustworthy unfortunately.
I wish they were Jules, but statistically, there are a few bad apples out there. I won't post a picture of our car without getting rid of the rego number and I rarely mention my home town either.

I am a member of a few forums and was duped by a few people on one we were all very much a part of. I learned my lesson the hard way, without parting with a lot of money so to speak.
It just pays to be cautious, like we tell our own kids and grandkids.
I have met rather a few off this forum and they are the salt of the earth.

I agree with Gordon also, there are some things i don't want to put in my profile, I don't mind letting people know in PMs but as you say anyone can see this info, it's something that I've been aware of and if you look at any pics that I've put on of our car or van I have blanked out the rego's.

For every good person there are crooks and con artists. This technology we've come to know and trust is also a gateway for the crooks. Even the GPS can give them a key to your door if you're silly enough to put your home address on it. The scammers don't steal your GPS when they break into your car, they just get your home address and hit it while you're away. Easy. The social websites are also open books. While it's great to learn a little more about fellow nomads, only release information you're comfortable sharing. It's just another downside of life, among all the good upsides.

I totally agree too Gordon.........No surnames or date of birth (just a year if you wish) and a rough idea of where you are from, eg; SA, WA, NSW etc, etc, as that helps people if you post looking for a good repairer etc etc. And as has been said their is always pm's with more info to those you trust.

I agree with you Vic, but it is good if it is narrowed down a bit as Australia is a big place,
eg Qld can be broken down to FNQ, SE Qld etc, without giving too much away..

Good point Gubby, whatever a member feels comfortable with, but as a minimum a State so members have some idea of where they are. I was mainly thinking about our female members who don't want to be hassled by........well, persistent blokes ! (Although we all have to take precaution against thugs and other not so nice people etc)
I used to leave my bedroom window open when I was single hoping some persistent female would hassle me, but never happened!

If you know how to use paint, just bring the photo up and paint out the number plate, then save and it will be ok to use again

A member and regular contributor to this forum recently was using her rig as her avatar and she just covered the number plate before taking the photo. Nothing technical about that but it achieved the purpose.
