Nice info Dougie, I try to fill useing the truck bowzer, being that the nozzel is nealy always full when you tip it in . Have wondered just how much was in vapor when you run it full blast.. Will do it slower from now on . Thank you again......Bob

Worth remembering but I have one point "One of the most important tips is to fill up when your Petrol
tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more Petrol you have in
your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Petrololine evaporates
faster than you can imagine. Petrol storage tanks have an internal
floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the Petrol and
the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service
stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature
compensated so that every litre is actually the exact amount."
When your towing a van with a lot of K's to do half a tank is not enough. If I see it cheap I get as much as I can no one knows how much it is at the next place Am I doing wrong or what every one else is doing.
The rest I can almost manage but the time one can be difficult.

Sorry let me rephrase that, you cant be stopping all the time and a lot of times it is a lot more than half a tank between stops.

When I was on my one and only trip, so I am an expert here, I filled up every morning upon leaving my overnight stop so I knew I had a full tank for the day. Usually still had about half a tank or just under at the time as only doing around 200 ks. So I covered two of those points. As for filling up when a fuel tanker is in there, I won't anyway as they take up so much room I don't want to go in there too. I notice in town here at the safeway outlet they block it off at the entrance most times. There's just not enough room anyway. Good points Dougie and glad to hear I've been doing something right.

I prefer to use the hi-flow nozzle. I just don't pull the trigger tight. The pressure makes the diesel blow back and shut the nozzle off anyway. I made a blunder when I first saw "Vortex", and put high octane petrol in my diesel Landcruiser. I didn't kill her, but it was a worry. So if I use the truckie bowser I know I'm getting diesel. Unless you're in the tropics the ground temp doesn't vary very much. In the tropics the ground is very hot at least 2 metres below ground level. You know you're in Broome when you get hot water out of both taps. The water pipe is underground there, and it's bore water.

This is not the first time that someone has posted some of this garbage that does the rounds of the emails without doing a simple search to check its accuracy.
A bit of common sense would suggest that lack of verifiable references would question whether these emails are "kosher" or not.

Totally agree, but my point is that someone copies a post from another forum, changes the location from the USA to Melbourne, claims he knows it all and states he has worked 31 years in the oil industry etc basiaclly giving other members here the impression that that is true. Makes me think!!!

Interesting tips. Let me see, I wonder how long it would take me to fill up my 275 litres of fuel tanks if I were to use the low setting on one of those car pumps, imagine how impatient those people in line behind me would become.
I have made up a sign to place at the rear of my vehicle when entering the service station warning punters behind me of the delays. I love those truck pumps they certainly get it in a bit quicker & if I were a man on an hourly rate I can imagine the little bit lost in vapour would be well worth it.
Thanks for passing the tips on in any case, it will certainly give those types a bit to argue about whilst around the camp fire/keyboard. : rofl:

What annoys me more than anything is the one that keep clicking off as you are trying to fill up. Some are so bad I feel like paying for the small amount I did get and going somewhere else. But I persevere.

Surely in the scheme of things it doesn't matter who put it up or if they worked in the petroleum industry or not.
The point of the exercise, in my opinion, is to give some thought to what we do and how we do it and if anything comes a small way towards making life easier, be it filling up the tanks or something entirely different, then it isn't a wasted effort, Snopes or no Snopes.
Any "insignificant" truth when multiplied by the probably thousands that we come across can make just that little bit of difference.
Anyway, thanks from me Doug. I take it in the vein it was meant

Do you agree that content simply get stolen from another website and not only reproduced with just changing the location but also claiming it it's own IP? At this stage I have no intentions of consulting Snopes as my reply was only intended to illustrate, rightly or wrongly, that the original post just stands to remind us that there are things that we can do, if we so choose, to make life just that tad easier on us and on others.

I can see where Cindy is coming from on this issue but then none of us are lawyers and most of us pass on things that we consider to be of some interest or advice to other GN's with only the best of intentions at heart.
If we all had to authenticate EVERY post we put up, then in my opinion, we wouldn't have too many postings on here and I for one would miss them.
We all have learnt a lot of things from this forum that more than a few of us would never have considered. It can't be all bad, but I guess we will just have to be careful in what we put up from here on in.

If Dougie had put up a thread stating Do this because I think its a good idea, Like: Only buy petrol in the morning when its cooler because......... Always fill up when the tank is about half full because........... Don't fill up if there is a tanker in there because............ Nobody would have agreed or disagreed as they are all legitimate ideas that make sense to most people.

We all have to be careful about what we claim to be our own work. When we quote anything or anyone, we have to acknowledge the source/author. In the jokes most of us would recognise they came from other emails etc, and not our own work. Copyright laws are there to protect the author/writer. We can't take credit for what is not our own, especially when there's payment at the end. Payment doesn't apply in this particular case, but we have to be responsible with the information we pass on. This is especially true when we pass on informative emails etc. Always check the validity and the origin before publishing. Another lesson demonstrating we are never too old to learn.

The article was certainly food for thought though whether correct or otherwise, and even if we haven't checked it out on Snopes or similar, perhaps a "I got this on an email" is better than no check at all, if someone knows it is a hoax or a copy of another that is fine and it doesn't worry me if someone points that out.
As as rule I do check things out on Snopes but sometimes if your in a hurry and you think something is legit you don't bother, I have been caught a few times myself but my friends have soon pointed out my error etc. I am glad that people do check these things out on Snopes, I would rather be informed that something is a hoax or copied from somewhere else/another author then at least I am not ignorant of the facts.
Some of you may recall the speech said to be by Nelson Mandella starting with "Our Deepest Fear" which was actually written by Marianne Williamson, for years I thought that was fact (by Nelson Mandella....not his original first name by the way), but it was not, it was Marianne Willamson, see;
I don't think we should take things to heart if someone points out we are wrong, otherwise none of us would pass things on at all, but as I said I am always greatful if someone points out snopes or other sources that show it was not who/what I thought it was.

As you most rightly say Vic, not everyone checks Snopes, for instance when we are on the road we use pre-paid and as you no doubt know checking things and opening links runs away with your credit, so I don't open any links etc., so that my available credit is used to keep in touch with my family
I am not 100% sure, but I think maybe Doug did refer to receiving the original post via email. I stand to be corrected of course.
I still stand by what I said and won't be passing anything along that I get via email just to be on the safe side.
With Petrol expected to reach $2 per litre by end of 2011, these tips might come in handy.
