The following letter was in my latest The Road Ahead, RACQ's members magazine.
"When driving, we take into account the abilities of P and L platers and give them extra consideration. But what about drivers over 70? Why can't they have, say, a purple P plate, if they would like to display one? It would show other road users that our elderly parents and grandparents sometimes need our patience and consideration on the roads as well."
What do you think?

I kinda think it might make them a target Beth, especially for those who think they should not be on the roads at all.

Good thought Jimbo. This was just a letter to the editor, so just someone who thinks he/she has a great idea. I think not, myself.

wont they work like how the p & l platers do now, ie some one else drives the car they take the thing of the car when not driving it?? but i do agree that it could make them targets for the A***** drivers out there who wouldnt care at all..

Yes Milo, there's a lot of those who give the P and L platers a hard time, so what would they do the seniors!

No, I don't think it will work?
Your son would be charged with "Underage driving."

I'd like to think that older drivers would be shown courtesy and care, but truth is I think they might be targetted by those low-lifes who would know they cant fight back.

I have often wondered how special plates or iconic letters like L and P plates work in the long run. I take note of the driver for the unexpected, but I have heard of people feeling they are targeted.
We have some real wild drivers that have no iconic plates on view. I think we could end up special plating, Smokers, mobil texters, children movers, and so on..L and P are enough.
Cheers Sharon

Seniors are already being unfairly negatively stereotyped by the media as moving road blocks, nuisances and dangerous on the road (in addition to being drains on the budget). A big purple label would enable the usual suspects to imagine and report more wrongs. Got to fill the columns somehow.
