I wonder how many people know you don't need a fishing licence to fish in Victorian Waters if you are a Senior with a Victorian Seniors Card.
To hold a Seniors Card in Vic you apply for one when you turn 60.
Not sure what happens in other states but thought this worthwhile making known on here.

Marj: - Dont get caught fishing on the Vic bank of the Murray as they deem it as NSW and you require a NSW fishing licence. Seniors & Pensioners are seen as another revenue stream up there. Cheers, John

I have a Commonwealth Gov. concession card.
As far as I know, having read the quidelines that any holder of a concession card is exempt. The only condition is that you must have the card in your posession at all times when you are fishing.

I don't own a fishing rod even. I just thought it might be helpful information for anyone of Senior Card age. I wrote it down as I read it from the Seniors Cardholders Handbook.

Jimricho: - Not contesting who owns the Murray River and dont care.
Just stating that you require a NSW fishing licence to fish in it and Vic Seniors Card doesn't cover it.
Marj: - Good on you for pointing out that the Seniors Card covers fishing in Victoria as a lot of people with cards are not aware of that.
The seniors card has some good discount but you "have to ask" when shopping.
The return rail pass is handy if you want to go to the big smoke on a shopping spree.

grumpy, you are so right, some great discounts but pays to ask. jimricho, if you own the Murray, how about getting down there and cleaning it out. Fallen trees, logs creating havoc. What an untidy and dirty mess. Its a shame as used to be a great tourist mecca.

I think you will find that they are chucking the logs back IN!! Evidently native fish need them for living and breeding. Anything to get rid of those rotten carp.....

Thanks guys, that was sort of tongue in cheek. Moama side used to have a lovely beach used by many over the summer months, it is no more. The people in charge said they will clean it up if the govt gives them some funds to cover the costs of the clean up.

It was my understanding that any state Seniors Card would cover you, is this not correct??
I don't have one so have no personal knowledge of benefits.

I would have thought so too Boroma, but can only go by the Vic publication as I have the Vic Seniors Card. The others would know what comes with their card in other states.

If you want to fish inland in Tasmania you have to buy a licence. Seniors/pension/DVA card doesn't cover it.

We were told whilst in Victoria and NSW recently that Seniors do not need to buy a licence to fish. I have just checked on the internet and if you have a Seniors Concession card provided by Centrelink or a Commonwealth card you are exempt. Hope this helps.

You are required to pay the NSW recreational fishing fee to fish in fresh and salt water in NSW unless you are:
Under the age of 18.
An adult assisting a person under the age of 18 to take a fish using a single rod or to take prawns using a single dip or scoop net.
A person fishing in a private dam with a surface area of two hectares or less.
An Aboriginal person.
The holder of:
current Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink;
current Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs;
Commonwealth Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Treatment Card endorsed "Totally and Permanently Incapacitated"(TPI);
Commonwealth Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Treatment Card endorsed "Extreme Disablement Adjustment" (EDA);
letter from the Commonwealth Department of Veterans' Affairs stating that the person receive a disability pension of 70 per cent or higher, or an intermediate pension.
Please note that Senior's Cards, Health Care Cards and Repatriation Health Cards will not exempt you from paying the fishing fee.
Centrelink advises that only the person who signs the card where it reads "Signature of cardholder" is the holder of that card. If an additional person is listed on the card (usually a spouse), this relates to health care benefits and not to other exemptions/concessions available to the pensioner concession card-holder.
Recreational fishers must have these cards in their possession whilst fishing to be exempt.

Something very fishy about this subject. I think if you are 60+ you should not have to pay as you have then paid taxes for a very long time and enough is enough.

It's those of us who have worked long and hard and paid our taxes that are the heaviest penalised.
If we hadn't worked, provided for our own retirement then we would have had all the lerks and perks.

Can't assume that everyone over 60 or 65 has paid tax in australia for 40-50 years. Some folk paid very little, or none at all................sorry to be politically incorrect here, or tactless, but not everyone works full time in australia from age 15-20 to retirement. .. and not everyone has provided for their own retirement either.

Wasn't implying that we ALL did that Rosie but I would say the majority of those in this age group did at least work and pay taxes.
Admittedly some haven't provided for their own retirement due mainly to circumstances I would suspect but there are quite a few who have.

We are all still paying plenty of taxes . When you buy fuel , liquer , clothing , tyres , accomodation , almost anything ,we pay taxes .

Also you Mexicans cheated when you fudged the border with South Australia! It's 3.6 kms west of Longitude 141 where it was supposed to be!

Victorians are an ungrateful lot! However, remember when we gave it away in 1851 we cleverly got rid of the portion on the whole east coast with the worst weather. Then in 1859 we (perversely) got rid of the portion with the best weather when we cut Queensland loose. Queenslanders,though, never seem ungrateful, and are always happy about it, even if only because it allows them to live in their own time zone.

Speaking of QLD you need a license to fish in stocked waterways. Speaking of ownership of the Murray I remember in another lifetime, late 70's I was working in the Victorian Courts and a bloke was found guilty of a murder committed on the bank of the river on the Vic side. He appealed and won as the Murray river is NSW up to the high water mark. All it did was cost a lot of money as he was sent to NSW and found guilty there.

Good cheap [ donation ] for the fisheries to do what they do so we can all enjoy fishing anywhere in Australia

I do believe that you will need a licence in Qld when fishing stocked dams and waterways.
In the sea and from wharfs and beaches are all ok.
Check before you cast if fishing a stocked body of water.
