With all the newbies I thought it was time to remind all about keeping secure on line.
Remember that any comments can be read by anyone out there in the big wide world of the web.
Remember that all members have access to your profile details, so too much information there may leave you vulnerable. Do you really want to be telling virtual strangers where you live and then announce you are going on holidays.
On the other hand it is useful to have some info about each other so perhaps do things such as list your location as a state or region instead of a town.
Just be mindful that in this internet world there is a small percentage of dishonest people just like in the real world.
Overall we are a great bunch on here so welcome to all the newbies, take care.

Hello Pam, and a timely warning Ken

Good reminder Pam,
I do not have a surname listed or exact location etc on my profile, if I want someone to know my address/email address etc I send it to them by pm, much safer that way. I also don't have my birth date for security reasons although a "near" date could be used is someone still wants to put one.
Do agree about a general area or state so if you are asking for info to buy goods or services in your state people know how to respond, no good telling anyone about a repairer etc in Perth unless someone is in this area, especially if they are living and presently in North Queensland or similar.
If I may, I would also like to remind newbies about adjusting their user detail settings so new posts will show up on top and they don't have to scroll right down to the bottom of threads. "Duh" here didn't know about that for ages until I saw someone mention it and adjusted my settings.

Same here Vic, I am happy to put my real name to posts(Brian) and am happy to exchange details with any member on PM

Good move Brian, while I would say that any info would be safe with the majority that post here members who do post know nothing of those who are registered but never post, but being registered have access to other members profiles.
Jack the Ripper or Blewie The Burglar could be registered here and we would never know, not to mention Louie The Fly!

Do you actually have to be registered to view the forum or is it open to the public in general??
Vic said
09:34 PM Jan 7, 2012
The forum is open to the public viewing Boroma, but not the profiles or membership list, also those not registered cannot post or make replies etc.
In other words you must be registered to view the profiles, however there is no way of knowing who the registered members are and most don't post so they could be anyone.

That's why it's not a good idea to put things such as phone numbers etc in your public posts.
That is what PM's are for- private messages you control who see it

It is not so much the crook/thief/axe murderer that I feel is the problem but more the possible theft of your identity....that seems to be the big issue these days of cyber space.

No worries Landy, I embarrased to say I was a member for some time before I was woken up to it.
Now for the ladies, this is why you have to be careful with your info etc (but don't let that stop you from living a full life).
This bloke may be one of the silent members here, you just never know!
