From my research to date as well as electric brakes fitted to the vehicle you may also need a 12V hotwire from your vehicle to the van for running the fridge while on the move.
It is also recommended by what I have read to make sure you have a circuit breaker for the hot wire so when you turn the ignition off it cuts the power from your car battery to your van fridge, otherwise if you stop too long you could get a flat vehicle battery......
I am only repeating what I have read on the subject, those experienced here can tell you better than I can my comments are only from research, not experience.

My research to date is that most caravans are wired for 12V powering of the fridge and charging the house battery via the vehicle battery while on the move including campervans. Battery Banks and Solar may be ok for when stationary, but I don't think that applies while travelling on the road if you want the fridge to work while on the move.
I wouldn't fancy doing a few hundred kilometres trip with perishables in the fridge only to arrive and find the fridge hasn't been working during the trip.

I thought you might like to see my new vehicle that we just ordered today. I am happy with our purchase - It is a 2010 Ford Ranger 4x4 Diesel with rear canopy and 20,000kms on the clock. Also has a tow bar fitted and bull bar at the front. We will be getting side steppers put on and electric brake kit for the van as well. Can't think of anything else at the moment *grins* . This means we are one step closer to heading out into the wide blue yonder!!

I know about the Ford thing but we have owned one before and it was a good car so what can I say . We currently have a Holden and I will be awfully glad to get rid of it

Congratulations..This is good Michelle....now you have your vehicle you now know what weight van you can get.
I am pretty sure your 2010 Ford Ranger has a braked towing capacity of 3000kg but youll need to double check that before you buy your van.
The 27 footer you have been looking at might be over that limit. Again youll need to check.
Things must be getting pretty exciting for you now.this is a great journey you are on.

And don't worry about the Ford Badge ! as I think they are really a Re-badged Mazda, so that has got to be good ??

I hope you can sell the scooter soon mate. I had to do all that for my dad as well about 8 years ago. I also had to sell his house for him when he was in a nursing home, boy, was that hard.

The charging is from the vehicle's alternator Cropper, not the vehicle's battery. My van fridge is a dedicated 12 volt; it is charged via an Anderson plug from the alternator when traveling and via solar panels when stationary.

Hi Boroma,
Yep the 27 footer has definitely been sold so that is out now. We are looking at a van around the 24 ft mark as that seems to be the size that has what we want. It can also be towed by the Ford. You are right the Ford has an ATW of 3000kgs.

Gday...
Baroma577 .... not sure I understand ... and will gladly defer to those wiser than I .... but, I would be fairly sure the Anderson Plug, powering the 12v fridge would be through either the tug cranking battery - or an auxiliary battery. I doubt if it would be hardwired from the alternator to the Anderson Plug therefore to the 12V fridge.
Because if the alternator is not charging (eg when vehicle engine is turned off) then there would be NO power at all for the 12v fridge.
cheers - John
