Hello have a 2006 100 series landcruiser turbo diesel 5 speed auto with 265k under her belt . Just setting up to do the wondering aimlessly thing . Havent purchased the rear view home yet but planning on a perhaps Lotus trooper or similar. My son in-law recommends doing some power performance modifications eg re map ??? And larger exhaust. I am a bit dubious about touching the vehicle re mods as I love her and dont want to do any modifications that would be detrimental in the future . Has anyone had any engine mods done to enhance the power factor on this engine . Any recommendations / feedback would be appreciated .

I personally would not they are a great engine and really don't need any mods unless your going to tow to your limit even then you don't save your money and spend on other modifications.

100% agree, you can spend 2 ot 3 grand or more to have a remapp and whiz bang 3" exhaust, some of the claims of improved power and fuel econmy baffle me as the money spent will take a lot of years to recover the cost, if you do get the claimed fuel saving.
I find the best way to save fuel is to exercise some control over the right foot.

Hi Adrian....yeah,I'd leave it as it is,as that engine develops 151kw of power and 430nm torque,very similar to the V8 turbo diesel in the 76,78 and 79 series,and more than many of the twin-cab utes that can allegedly tow 3500kg! Yeah,right.With your GVM of 3260kg,it seems you can SAFELY tow a van with an ATM of around 3250kg,which,assuming the generally accepted 10% towball weight,would give you a van with weight on wheels (GTM if you like) of 2925kg behind a car with weight on wheels of 3260kg.(On paper!) The car would then be around 11% heavier than the car,minimising the chances of the "tail wagging the dog". In actual fact you will never be able to reach your GVM because of the rear axle rating of only 1950kg and short wheelbase of only 2850kg. Realistically,because weight is transferred from the car's front axle to the rear axle when a van is hooked up,the maximum you will be able to safely tow is around 3000kg.And I'm sure that most would agree that 151kw is more than enough for that weight..... the car will go forever with that engine. I just want to observe the beaut scenery when I can . The vehicle is a gem in my opinion and my 4th LC starting with a shorty 40 (3Lt B )then a 60 (2H) motor then 80 (1HZ) and now the 100 . I just cant bring myself to part with her and go the next step .

Check the weight of the Lotus Trooper, it is a heavy van. Leave the cruiser stock standard. I tow a 2008 Lotus Trackvan ATM 3100kg with no problem at all. Tow in 4th to save auto from overheating from torque converter slipping, change auto oil at least every two years.
Injectors should be recond. about 150000 to 180000 kms. Unlike 200 series that have to be replaced, these can have a kit put through them.
If you want to change something you can rearrange the battery's. Only one is needed to start these cruisers, so one ( drivers side ) can be separated by using a solenoid ( eg. Redarc ) and replaced with All Rounder etc to run fridge etc. if required.
Been towing with mine for 15 years now, best vehicle I have ever had.

Thanks Barry . Yer early days yet re van purchase . Had my first look the other day at a 19.6 Kedron but will be too heavy . The trooper may be the same . Want to keep the 100 and not go yank tank if possible . I agree re injectors and will be doing that for sure . Have you ever changed out your injector lines ?? Does your tranny get hot towing in 5th . Have been told to put them in 5th and let the box sort it out ??? You have more experience than me and would like to learn more about this issue .at present all I tow is a light camper trailer and my boat to and from boat ramp .Done the redarc thing when I bought her and modified the battery holders to fit Yellow top optima batterys . Have put an engine saver system on her but will replace radiator and tranny cooler at the same time before we hit the road Currently service tranny every 40k kms .
Any recommendations welcome

Hi Gumbo, no I have not replaced injector lines
Transmission -- I have been having my autos serviced and rebuilt by the same auto trans. specialist for over 30 years and he advised me to tow in 4th and leave it there. Heat will kill a auto and towing in 5th will have the torque converter slipping and heating the auto. Towing with my van I drive at 2400 rpm giving 89 - 90 kph or if conditions are correct I will go to 2500 rpm giving 93 kph. This returns 20 - 21 lt per 100 klm
My advice is to not take my word for this but to find an experienced auto tranny rebuilder middle aged or older and ask his opinion.
I see you have an Engine Saver low water alarm, so do I. Also I have a Water Watch by Responsive Engineering fitted between filter and firewall.
Before fitting this I was going to put an extra filter on, but after much research I found that these engines need the fuel flow as standard to develop full power and to cool the injector pump. The water watch has no restriction.
A Koyo radiator is as close to original as you can get.
For towing I found that going around bends the cruiser would lean to the opposite side and felt not nice so fitted Poly air bags to the rear. I only put 15psi in them but keeps the cruiser stable at all times and the suspension can still move as it should.

On the contrary,I have indeed driven a 200,which is why I never would buy that much-overrated car. Beautiful car for Mum to cart the tribe around in,but as a tow vehicle,a 200 can never safely tow more than 3000kg ATM.Period.Cheers

Thanks Barry . Interesting stuff re tranny and yes I will question my transmission specialist about the question at hand . I think I have heard it through lcool that the 5th gear is not an overdrive but an actual gear . But starting to wonder if I was thinking 5 speed manual which I owned before I purchased the auto . Like you recommend, ask a pro . Totally agree regarding secondary / primary fuel filters. Never been a fan and a mate cooked a 200 s pump due to retarding fuel flow and 12 grand later . Ouch . Didnt know you could get a water sensor for your fuel system. Sounds logical. Could you provide a supplier name if you dont mind please . Have run rear air bags in her for about 8 years now . Definitely make a difference especially when towing . Run AIR BAG MAN at 18 psi towing camper and 10 around town ..Tried looking for your van last night and couldnt find any info / second hand ones . Curious on why your longer van is lighter than the trooper . Sounds like a great alternative to the trooper . Did you buy your van new ?? I have to do a lot more research before I jump in re vans , because I honestly am a first timer regarding travelling in one . Done a lot of travelling in campers but I think vans are an obvious different kettle of fish .

My van is really an early trooper, Badged Trackvan for Caravan World on Sunshine Coast. We bought from original owners.
It is 21 ft measured as we used to along the side of the van itself. 8.6 m o/a from tow coupling to rear of spares.
You are obviously looking at a tandem van so I suggest you think about what suspension you want. The best would be a load sharing independent, most coil sprung independent suspensions are not load sharing, or you can have load sharing spring and rocker setup but not independent. Our van has Simplicity Suspension that is load sharing independent. Damned good, down the Oodnadatta Track nothing moved inside the van.
Personally I prefer a 6 inch chassis to a 4 inch, something else to think about.
Then look at fridges, 3 way or compressor. If compressor like us you will need solar to keep battery's charged when off power.
Water, how many tanks do you want. We have 3 x 90 ltr equals 270 kgs. Remember your weights.
Everyone has different needs so you just have to sort out what you want.

Greg,may I suggest that you use the "search" function on this site to access the many messages that I ,and others,have posted,explaining how it is absolutey impossible to set up an LC200 to safely tow 3500kg ATM.The problem is the short wheelbase,long TBO (Towball overhang,or distance from rear axle to hitch point) and the lightweight rear axle rating of 1950kg in standard form.Spending thousands of your hard earned dollars on the much-vaunted GVM upgrade increases that axle rating to only 2000kg,a gain of a miserable 50kg. Why would you even bother when there are many cars,even the twin-cab utes,that can safely tow around 3200kg ATM?Short of the big Yank tanks,I know of only one car that has the rear axle capacity to safely and legally tow 3500kg ATM.Sad,inconvenient truth,but an indesputable fact to those of us who have any understanding of weights and physics.Cheers

Obviously you have had your vehicle for a long time and was wondering if you run synthetic oil or just the usual. I run DELO 400 . Also I will ordered the water in fuel alarm system from responsive engineering $590 but a great insurance as we hope to work the stations and outback WHEN ! We get mobile . Would you mind explaining the suspension system you mentioned thats supporting your van . Is it a leaf spring over shock absorber system which in my experience with campers are very effective. One again hope you dont mind all the questions .

I have been using Castrol Magnatec 15w 40 since near new. I used to run BP oils in my trucks with great success so have stuck to BP products ---Castrol
Google " SIMPLICITY AXLES " and you will get to see them made in various videos on their site. We have the original style with the leaf spring, no shock absorber. In 2017 they released a new style with coils and one shock each side. Still load sharing and independent.
No I do not mind the questions, but just remember the answers will be my opinions only and others may/will be different. You will have to separate the wheat from the chaff.
We have got this thread of topic now and maybe we should go to PM if I can figger it out.
What are everyones thoughts on this ? keep going or PM ? or start new thread ?

I just bought a 2001 4sp 100 series diesel turbo with 470K on the clock.
I talked to the owner and the mechanic who works on it and they said they have never changed the injectors on it.
Should I change them? the car seems to be going o.k.
Now if you recomend to change them do I change them to those +30 injectors I have been reading about?
Coming from a petrol 105, to this diesel it certainly rattles a lot more!

P.s the past few years I have started to travel australia with the family. I have been talking to the grey nomads who have 100 series diesels and all have upgraded theirs to tow their house on wheels.
upgrades vary from exhaust,intercoolers,larger radiators and chipping. All swear by them. The one thing all of them had in common, they loved their 100 and their engine bays so clean you can eat from.I was so impress after a few years saving I finaly bought one!

Geday MIXO . My 100 has 260K on it with no injector change but I will change them and the feed lines before I head off into the abyiss . I would rebuild the 4 speed at those kms if you can afford it . Like I mentioned earlier met up with a bloke with one last year in the Kimberleys and he had over 700k on his . He was doing an oil change every 5k and used synthetic oil. There a good truck but maintenance is still essential like anything. Have had mine for 12 years now and never had a problem. I intend to replace my tranny cooler before I travel also . My transmission specialist recommended an after market upgrade . Barrys recommendation re water in Fuel alarm is a good idea in my opinion rather than a secondary filter.

Only bought the car as it was recommended to me by my mechanic. He has done all the servicing on it, he knows the owner and how fussy he has been with the car.
I can see thru the service history only penirite synthetic was used.Also gone thru a few alternators and sterring wheel pumps(past 8 years).
I hope I can get through another 300K on it, as its my travelling(holiday and caravaning/camping) car not my daily.The car was used to go on trip around australia and to Queensland(from VIC) so I'm hoping most of the miles on this car are country!
Hopefully when I retire(12 yrs) I have enough for a 200 or 300(curious to see what toyota does).

Like you recommend, ask a pro . Totally agree regarding secondary / primary fuel filters. Never been a fan and a mate cooked a 200 s pump due to retarding fuel flow and 12 grand later . Ouch . Didnt know you could get a water sensor for your fuel system. Sounds logical. Could you provide a supplier name if you dont mind please . Have run rear air bags in her for about 8 years now . Definitely make a difference especially when towing . Run AIR BAG MAN at 18 psi towing camper and 10 around town ..Tried looking for your van last night and couldnt find any info / second hand ones . Curious on why your longer van is lighter than the trooper . Sounds like a great alternative to the trooper . Did you buy your van new ?? I have to do a lot more research before I jump in re vans , because I honestly am a first timer regarding travelling in one . Done a lot of travelling in campers but I think vans are an obvious different kettle of fish .

My van is really an early trooper, Badged Trackvan for Caravan World on Sunshine Coast. We bought from original owners.
It is 21 ft measured as we used to along the side of the van itself. 8.6 m o/a from tow coupling to rear of spares.
You are obviously looking at a tandem van so I suggest you think about what suspension you want. The best would be a load sharing independent, most coil sprung independent suspensions are not load sharing, or you can have load sharing spring and rocker setup but not independent. Our van has Simplicity Suspension that is load sharing independent. Damned good, down the Oodnadatta Track nothing moved inside the van.
Personally I prefer a 6 inch chassis to a 4 inch, something else to think about.
Then look at fridges, 3 way or compressor. If compressor like us you will need solar to keep battery's charged when off power.
Water, how many tanks do you want. We have 3 x 90 ltr equals 270 kgs. Remember your weights.
Everyone has different needs so you just have to sort out what you want.

Greg,may I suggest that you use the "search" function on this site to access the many messages that I ,and others,have posted,explaining how it is absolutey impossible to set up an LC200 to safely tow 3500kg ATM.The problem is the short wheelbase,long TBO (Towball overhang,or distance from rear axle to hitch point) and the lightweight rear axle rating of 1950kg in standard form.Spending thousands of your hard earned dollars on the much-vaunted GVM upgrade increases that axle rating to only 2000kg,a gain of a miserable 50kg. Why would you even bother when there are many cars,even the twin-cab utes,that can safely tow around 3200kg ATM?Short of the big Yank tanks,I know of only one car that has the rear axle capacity to safely and legally tow 3500kg ATM.Sad,inconvenient truth,but an indesputable fact to those of us who have any understanding of weights and physics.Cheers

Thanks again Barry you have been a wealth of information for me . Hope you dont mind me pestering you as this is all new to me and you cant beat good old fashion experience . Obviously you have had your vehicle for a long time and was wondering if you run synthetic oil or just the usual. I run DELO 400 . Also I will ordered the water in fuel alarm system from responsive engineering $590 but a great insurance as we hope to work the stations and outback WHEN ! We get mobile . Would you mind explaining the suspension system you mentioned thats supporting your van . Is it a leaf spring over shock absorber system which in my experience with campers are very effective. One again hope you dont mind all the questions .

I have been using Castrol Magnatec 15w 40 since near new. I used to run BP oils in my trucks with great success so have stuck to BP products ---Castrol
Google " SIMPLICITY AXLES " and you will get to see them made in various videos on their site. We have the original style with the leaf spring, no shock absorber. In 2017 they released a new style with coils and one shock each side. Still load sharing and independent.
No I do not mind the questions, but just remember the answers will be my opinions only and others may/will be different. You will have to separate the wheat from the chaff.
We have got this thread of topic now and maybe we should go to PM if I can figger it out.

Yep all good thanks Barry . Definitely have wanted off cause sorry to all for that . But have learned a lot in my fledgling days on the site . 1/dont mod the engine in the rig. 2/keep the rig 3/ learn more about 5 speed transmission and towing . 4/ fit water in fuel alarm system 5/ research simplicity axle System. I talked to the owner and the mechanic who works on it and they said they have never changed the injectors on it.
Should I change them? the car seems to be going o.k.
Now if you recomend to change them do I change them to those +30 injectors I have been reading about?
Coming from a petrol 105, to this diesel it certainly rattles a lot more!

P.s the past few years I have started to travel australia with the family. I have been talking to the grey nomads who have 100 series diesels and all have upgraded theirs to tow their house on wheels.
upgrades vary from exhaust,intercoolers,larger radiators and chipping. All swear by them. The one thing all of them had in common, they loved their 100 and their engine bays so clean you can eat from.I was so impress after a few years saving I finaly bought one!
Geday MIXO . My 100 has 260K on it with no injector change but I will change them and the feed lines before I head off into the abyiss . I would rebuild the 4 speed at those kms if you can afford it . Like I mentioned earlier met up with a bloke with one last year in the Kimberleys and he had over 700k on his . He was doing an oil change every 5k and used synthetic oil. There a good truck but maintenance is still essential like anything. Have had mine for 12 years now and never had a problem. I intend to replace my tranny cooler before I travel also . My transmission specialist recommended an after market upgrade . Barrys recommendation re water in Fuel alarm is a good idea in my opinion rather than a secondary filter.

I can see thru the service history only penirite synthetic was used.Also gone thru a few alternators and sterring wheel pumps(past 8 years).
I hope I can get through another 300K on it, as its my travelling(holiday and caravaning/camping) car not my daily.The car was used to go on trip around australia and to Queensland(from VIC) so I'm hoping most of the miles on this car are country!
Hopefully when I retire(12 yrs) I have enough for a 200 or 300(curious to see what toyota does).
