Looking for some feedback please on A/T tyres. Size 265 x 60r x 18

Vehicle is Landrover Discovery and we tow a 2.8t offroad van. Do a bit of dirt road so like to drop tyre pressures when needed.

Have investigated most others like, Cooper, BFG, Yoko, Bridgestone, Toyo, Kumho and some I have forgotten?

Have narrowed our choice, I think, down to Maxxis Razr 811(fairly new) or Falken Wildpeak AT3.

I guess I'm hoping for some feed back on both of these, in particular while towing heavy loads, kms one might expect to get out of a set(approx).

Certainly any feedback about other brands also if I have missed some

 Although I have no experience with the brands you've "narrowed our choice down to" I will say,from experience,to stay away from the BFGs. At the moment I run Mickey Thomsons,but after much research I almost bought the Toyo,which seems to be a great tyre. Had Bridgestone 697s,but not impressed and I ditched them early.Maxxis would be my pick from your two options.Tyres are a nightmare,with different tyres better suiting different applications,but Yokos and Kumho both have good reputations,I believe.Good luck with your research though,and please let us know of your final choice!  Ran GT three for sometime until we sold our Discovery. Next new car Bridgestone, just a tyre. Next Flaken, yes happy 65 000 is shorten life by incorrect wheel alignment.

Now extremely happy with Michellin Force LTX. Proving to be a great all rounder, sealed roads, forest roads, thrown in some serious 4wding.

Very happy, I am expecting very good kilometres from them.

Thanks Yobarr, not a big fan of BFG, although they have a strong following, had them on "years" ago on my old Tojo HJ61 and feel they have'nt change much since.
Had the Toyo Open Country on my BT50, good tyre overall, but looking at something with better wear when towing, well hopefully anyway!
Yep, tyres are a nightmare, different vehicles, conditions, drivers, and opinions etc etc!

I have Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus 255/60R18 on the Freelander. I can't comment on anything else. They work, I don't think the tread will last excessively long looking at how much they have worn.

They are getting noisier as they get older, but because I have stuffed the car full of acoustic insulation they are a pretty quiet background noise.

I had the Maxxis Bravo AT700 which gave me 70,000 km of wear including 25,000 towing 2.6t with my Jeep GC.  Was very happy with them - a great all round tyre for handling, noise wear & grip.  My mate had the same on his tricked out (read heavy) DMax camper, and he too was very happy.  I wanted to replace them with another set but couldn't because of COVID shortages.  Trusted dealer of 25 years advised on the Wildpeaks as an alternative.  His words when recommending the Maxxis - "I could sell you something with higher mileage or more aggressive tread, but after the first wet roundabout, you'd be back here complaining"

So far (only 10,000 km) the Wildpeaks look like new, handle well and I expect them to last as long as the Maxxis. A couple of things I did notice with them - on smooth surface highways they set up a slight almost mechanical sounding whine - not loud but noticeable.  They also had a really strange smell after a run for the first few thousand kms.

first set lasted from 33k to 105k. approx. 55k towing. Birdsville tk from maree to isa, Gibb RR twice, old savannah way from Roper to Normanton, cape York.

Bought another set when tread got down too low.

BJ regularly have a buy 4 pay for 3 deal.

About five years past I put some aggressive Maxxis AT tyres on the Jackaroo for serious 4WDing in the Vic High Country, I cannot remember the model. An excellent tyre, good grip, good wear, reasonably quite on the bitumen and no punctures. I'd buy another set.

Are you refering to Goodyears GT3, they appear to be a road tyre which is not what I am after!!

Had a look at the Michellin Force LTX, not a bad looking tyre, their rating is a bit low for what we do

Probably looking for something a bit more rugged

 "A bit of dirt road" is not justification for more expensive and faster wearing tyres that will increase fuel consumption.

Pick a good highway tyre with a high load rating.

 Second that Greg ,they really are  very underrated , I have had them for last 10 years and the latest model AT3 is even better .

I have never had a problem with the sidewalls and been on some pretty rough tracks .

Thanks, I guess "a bit of dirt road" is open to ones own interpretation, My Bad!

No I won't be going down that path of a good quality highway tyre, not worried about fuel as overall it is minimal in my opinion.

The dirt roads I am talking about, GRR, Savanagh Way and roads up outback SA, NSW etc etc, plus others which can change regularly and seasonally, hence A/T.

Is it the DynaPro, which one! its seems there are several types of even these?

I have ben a Toyo man for 6 years, 120,000km, out of last set, they do the job, but at $300( on special) and $ 400 when not, I would bloodywell expect them to last. Just make sure yoy buy the Made In Japan versions and not made in China( maybe 50,000 if your lucky)

Dynapro  AT-M RF 10 or (RF 11 latest ) both good

good looking tyre too ,if there is such a thing LOL  (gotta have the white writing  he he )

Can't without the possibilty they will rub. The Disco comes standard with 19inch rims, which limits your  tyre size to only low profile ****ty no name rubbish!

I have purchased a new set of 18inch alloy rims from a mob in Qld who get them made for the Landrovers(all legal), which is great as I get a far larger range to choose from in most good quality tyres. The only down size is that you still are limited to the profile as you may get some rubbing.

After researching on Landrover forums it appears that 265 x60r will give no problems where as the 65r "could" cause some issues.

So for this reason will have to stick with the 265x60, which I think will be fine. I will have confidence when dropping tyre pressures on those roads where risk of sidewall damage is high.

Hope this explains clearly my decision on size

Well done for getting some non poodle rims as I call them (anything of a larger pointless diameter).

I think you should be able to get 265/65R18 on a D3/D4 without any lifts etc. Check the forums thoroughly.

Some seem to use 265/60R18 on the Freelander, width being an issue with the rear shocks. They must be down to a tissue paper gap as it is 4.4mm with 255mm width.

 I have been checking forums for the last 6mths and it is not clear, opinions vary as to weather the 65s rub or not. Tyre selection is possibly critacal. Some say yes and others no. The only definate is that the 60s will not rub.

Considering checking with tyre store to see if they are prepared to mess around perhaps and try both and see if they fit, up on the hoyst only obyiously.

The other option is to just get the 60s

The probs on the Disco appear to be at the front end and not the rear.

Most tyres Iam looking at make both sizes so will decide on the day with the installer?
