I'm a 2 as well. I seem to have slotted into doing a big trip once a year, going places I've never been, and several shorter, closer to home trips in between.
I can't see me every being a permanent nomad. I have too many health issues.

We've been #1s for two and a half years now, but will probably settle down within the next 6-8 months. Haven't seen everything on offer yet, but just starting to become less enamoured of the drawbacks such as not having decent kitchen bench space. Wouldn't have swapped the time on the road for the world though.

Gday...
I'm a number One .... and this was an interesting thread.
I was only saying this morning to another traveller here at the free-camp with me. I have been on the road for a bit over two years and I have yet to meet a "full-time" traveller. Everyone I have chatted to are Number Two's.
I guess I just move in the wrong circles - or is that I go round in circles
Cheers
John

I'm #1, but I park up in my van for periods of varying lengths. I've been living full time in a van since 1998 when I settled in Broome for a year, "to have a look around", which ended up being 9 years before I hitched up and moved on out. The van I lived in wasn't really roadworthy because of age and chip board. Roma is better suited to the job. I don't need real estate and furniture, nor kitchen bench space. I'm very adaptable.

The idea of so many number 1's and 2's suddenly gave me the giggles. Sorry. I'll behave now, thank you for your replies.
We were chatting about this at a morning "happy hour" (as you do) and people came up with names for types of travellers, such as True Grey Nomad (1) or Grey Tourist (2) then those who come back annually were Migratory Greys (3) the families were of course Nomadic Families(4), and nobody could think of a name for the (5) except the "Britz Brigade".
Can anybody suggest better names for these groups, cant have any nmore Number ones and twos!!!!
PS I reckon there should be a special place for hosts as well, and wannabe's are "Future Nomads!"

I guess using that scale besides being a cranky nomad, I would be a 1 1/2 as we have rented the house out and live in the van permenantly but divide opur time camping in our sons 12 acre back yard and going on 2 to 3 month trips

I have been trying to get away more, but, I suppose 4 months on the road a year is all I get , when you have to"work" for a living. I would love to be on the road full time , but money keep me working, for the time being. It would be nice but that 4 letter word, WORK, and the lack of the lotto win, keeps me looking forward to" retirement".

That'll make it 12 months all up - mus tbe doing something right - no rent no phone bill no power bill no rates house provided what more can you ask for eh? And get paid for it too. cheers Terry n Liz

Gerty,
I really do not find the Grey Nomad an endearing term. I Know Aussies do not necessarily chase the sun ...but the USA term of Snow birds is so much more engaging.
Grey is such a yuk non colour, Black or white is so much more defined and classic. Red, yellow and purple engage the mind and the soul...Grey just leaves you thinking it needs a clean.
I don't know if this improves No 1 and no 2 though...lol
I see my self as a fun seeker.....
cheers Sharon

We are 5-6 months per year Grey Nomads. This is ideal, it means it is a good break and gives us time to maintain our farm on our return. And hopefully catch up with other Grey Nomads when they stop over with us in the Winter and Spring.
Bent Axle Bob left the farm a couple of days ago after 4 days here.

I'm a number 1. Have been for 3 years now. (Wow! was it really 3 years ago I felt the fear and let go of the sight of the safe shores?)
I do stop for a couple of months every now and again to 'top up the travel funds'.
But my census papers stated 'no fixed abode'.
