but do travel alone .. My pet bird, an Alexandrine Parrot that I hand raised is now with one of my lads as I couldn't provide the space he needed .. but we still chat on the phone !
For me to travel with a female companion would first need to be in separate vehicles .. then if there to be any advancement, it would require both parties to have found common ground, equally shared with a natural accceptance for each other .. In other words, you would both have to "click" .. I'm not looking .. but we'd both know if it did happen ..

I've done trips with people and alone and always with a dog or two. When I travelled extensively alone it was before laptops and online networks so it seemed a lot more isolated than now, not that that was ever a real problem.
I look forward to being permanantly solo but also hooking up occasionally with various friends occasionally to do short trips together - sorta like a holiday from myself. Preferably they will have their own van and we will camp together.
Depending on the destination and the terrain I would enjoy tagging along on occasions. Security is an issue and it's important to feel safe so I would always prefer to set up camp where there are other people but that's not always essential.
I would always want to have a dog as a companion.

I travell with S.W.A.M.B.O and have done so for the last 40yrs.Have just come back from a trip to Carnarvon with sis&b.i.l they in thier own van, i would still prefer to travell by ourselves and meet up at arranged stops,it just makes it easier as you can go at your own pace. We still had a great 3wks though.

That seems a much better idea for me too NandK...travel alone and meet up somewhere.

Some people have their dogs with them, but I wouldn't like to have to clean up after them, so I guess a stuffed dog would be an alternative. No poop to pick up.

True story, I met a one legged bloke with a wooden leg in Townsville shopping mall who stopped to talk to us, and as we were leaving said, when you get around the corner you will see my campervan, say hello to my wife.
When we went around the corner we saw his campervan, and in the passenger seat was a female store dummy dressed up with a hat etc....
There are some funny characters around, we both had a good laugh.

Vic .. I'm thinking of selling the bike and maybe tow a small car on a trailer .. While I do love bikes, it is a little annoying in that I'm quite restricted to what I can carry and the distance I can travel on it ..
If anyone has a small car trailer that they wanna sell, I might be interested .. gotta be small though .. something to maybe carry a little Hyundai size vehicle ..

Jon, I saw a very small car the other day but can't remember the name of it, was much smaller than a Hyundai even, would have been ideal. Lots seem to go for the Suzuki but could be a bit bigger than the Hyundai Getz, not sure.

The Driver and I prefer to travel without others, finding it too restrictive to have to cater for other people's schedules, preferences, etc. The only exception is that we sometimes travel in tandem with my best friend (of some 50 years). She and I were bushwalking in remote areas, and hitch hiking round the country, decades before the driver came on the scene, so we have always been compatible travel companions. She is now an independent traveller, in a troopy based camper, and we tend to think alike in terms of destinations, activities, so that works - maybe because we also go our separate ways a lot of the time. She travels with a stuffed toy kelpie on the seat beside her - that travel companion was adopted from the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta when we were there in 2007.
This year, we added a live dog to the mix - our Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog pup, who has taken to the van lifestyle really well, on the couple of short trips we have done with her this year. Unfortunately, though, it looks like the van times may now be over - totally out of left field, the driver has just had to have a triple bypass.

My younger brother also feels much fitter after open heart surgery 2 years ago.

My Mum who is almost 80 had triple bypass December last year, took her awhile to get going but since then 6 weeks ago had hip replacement and in last 2 weeks have not heard her sound better, so don't give up on travelling it might take awhile but it will happen, medical science nowadays is UNBELIEVABLE cheers

Thanks folks. It is amazing what medical science can do. He has already had two hip replacements - and major PE episodes after each one. I think he is ready to stop travelling. Esmeralda, I have done some of the driving in the past - when himself needed a rest. Problem is that he has got to be the world's worst passenger - I reckon me trying to drive him on a trip would bring on a heart attack! We only live half an hour's drive from where he is going to be in rehab, but I have already told him he can come home from there in a taxi when the time comes.
I travel with "Cheeky Chad" The Gnome-ad....
