A funny little mistake I made all during my youth.
I lived 4 doors away from the Princes Hwy in Sydney. When I was a kid and and for years later I assumed and pronounced it Princess Hwy.

When we were travelling in Victoria late last year, my bil said he'd always thought it was Princess Highway. He obviously hadn't been poring over the maps like I had!

When we were travelling in Victoria late last year, my bil said he'd always thought it was Princess Highway. He obviously hadn't been poring over the maps like I had!
But what's my excuse? I travelled on it most days for about 8 years.
Hylda says I do have a bad habit of skimming over sentences and missing vital parts of them so I guess that has something to do with it. Never was a wiz at school.

I hear newscasters, radio people etc., pronouncing it "Princess" all the time (well when in Victoria) - bugs me!
My mother in law used to say one of her kids was "plassive" - placid/passive.

Lots of people call c o c k roaches c o c k a roaches. Some people can't pronounce performance, even professional announcers. Some kind of mental block that turns per into pre so that it becomes preformance. Another one is pasghetti instead of spaghetti. Hehe. Oh yes, recanise instead of recognise. And vunerable instead of vulnerable (but apparently it's acceptable now to go with the silent 'l').
The thing I remember most about my early days in country radio was being given a list of town and street names with the correct pronuniciations. Mispronouncing local names, as far as the locals are concerned, is unforgivable.

My grandduaghter at 4 has just learnt how to say cucumber instead of cumepumper. Bit sad really because it sounded so cute.

That IS cute Troopy.
My 3 year old grandaughter is pretty good with pronunciation, but hospital always comes out missing the 's'. And why is she saying hospital..because her Mum works in one as a Prosthetist & Orthotist. Mum is now trying to teach her to say those two, as her day carers ask her what her Mum does at the hospital. Good luck Mum!

That is soooo cute, My 5 yr Gdaughter used to say lickup for lipstick and I still say it to her and she does not remember that is what she used to say cause she is BIG!!!! now....

My nephew used to say cookaracha, and it seemed to go through the family, as did harsegroper for grasshopper.
I used to be amazed at the differences between the state and NZ for things like swimmers (bathers), rockmelon (cantaloupe), potato scallops (potato cakes) and esky (chilly bin).

One of the kids in my family used to say bascetti for spagetti, and memimite for vegemite.
I picked up 'how embarrassment' from TV, I think it was 'Effy', and I still say it.
Since my brush with Atrial Fibrillation, I have a terrible time pronouncing the second bit!

I was talking to a bloke at work today, and he was telling me about his deaf dog and the funny things its got up to. I asked him what he called it. He said "nothing, it was deaf".
