Hmmmm. Only takes 10 to 20 mins to replace pinion gear and slot it back in. Il try that first and if speedo works problem solved. If not then il pull whole cable out and also check speedo cable at dash end.

We used to put cable at gearbox end in electric drill and run at low speed - to test.

Now that's a good way to go about it! Might give that a go once the rain eases up so that if it's not the pinion gear then I can start on on other things to fix it.
As a bottom of the barrel idea, which may be expensive
If you find that your only alternative, is to obtain a 22 tooth speedo pinion gear, and if you can not wait for one from Japan
You could ask around at a machine shop, if they could make one for you one

Hi Tony Bev
Cheers for the input. It all helps.
I have a 21 tooth pinion gear on its way from VIC. Will replace by the end of the week and hopefully fixes the issue with the speedo only being 4.5% out. Then get once j get engineer cert I will also have a gps speedo hooked up.
If the pinion gear does not fix the issue I have more tests to do to figure out if it's the actual cable or even the gear at the speedo / dash end.
Cheers
Mick

Ha! It's that long since I last did that (on my old Vanguard) there were no battery drills. I used one of those old 'egg beater' type hand drills.
BTW I saw them still for sale in Bunnings .. even had a choice of two models.

Speedo is all working fine now. Just a few % off. So all is fine.
Check for dry solder joints at the crystal.
