Well I do admit I don't know much about computers, I also admit to getting cranky with it and hitting every key in sight, no patience what-so-ever and I just love pulling the plug on it. Is it any wonder that is is not working properly, between the grandkids and me it did take a bashing. I also have a bad habit of not signing out of the forum. I forget, old age ya know. It is a lap top so I took it over the road and gave it to the computer guy to fix. I reckon he rubs his hands together in glee every time I walk into his shop.

Dave ,Xp does have system restore. You get to it by clicking on the start button bottom left hand corner then, programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.
Nannymon, once you have your computer up running fine it is a good idea to regularly go and set a restore point. That way if your system crashes just go back into restore and choose the last restore point. Hope this helps

Don't you put the kero in the back and light it up an hour before coming on line .
When I first kicked off with computers it was a DOS operating system and after all these years I'm still only just comfortable finding the on button. Every time you think you have it down pat Bill Gates changes the bloody system to some other must purchase package that will do it faster than light speed , why I ask does it need to travel faster than light, my eyes won't focus that fast and my grey matter can't process the info on screen that fast either .
As for kids I love kids but couldn't eat a full one

well there you go, information from a far more knowledgeble person than I, my knowledge goes as far as firing it up, cursing it when it fails and switching it off when I get the grits with it, if your system does silly things again mon follow the above instructions from gary

NannyMon ...
You might find that a copy of 'Windows XP for Dummies' is a good investment.
When I retired about 10 yrs ago I suddenly had a problem in that when I had a computer glitch, I could no longer put my head out of the office door & holler for an expert.
Once I got an up to date (rather outdated now) PC, my first purchase was XP for Dummies. It is well used and well loved and comes immediately when I have a call for it.
cheers .. Graham.
ps .. The book says 'When your system's ailing, System Restore provides a magical way to go back in time to when your computer was feeling better. System Restore works by taking a daily snapshot of your computers settings as well as an automatic snapshot before you install a new computer part ... etc etc''. It goes on to tell you how to set up and name a restore point yourself.
As suggested in a previous post, you should get in to the habit of doing it regularly ... I do it as part of my monthly 'clean up' routine (should be more often). Got to go now .. Off to the Sunshine coast for a few days!!!

Windows by Microsoft, according to Twobob
To know what version you use, it will normally come up at startup. You also can go to "control panel", and select the "help" button, then "about windows", and it will also tell you the version and the service pack (update) you are at.
Also, on startup, for a failed system start, hit f8, as it try's to start, and it should give you a selection for "start at the last known good configuration". AND, "start in safe mode". In safe mode you can do very little, but possible find what had caused the problem (it does not load drivers)
On a continous "blue screen", take the hint and drink beer until nothing bothers you anymore.
I have learnt it is not a good thing to let your grandkids play on your computer
Besides..I'm going to get completely lost tomorrow and going to love it.
