It was announced today that WA is doing away with vehicle Registration Stickers and I assume this will apply to caravans and trailers.  The reason given was the WA Police have the ability the check the vehicle registration status on the vehicle onboard computers and not having the stickers will be a huge saving to WA taxpayers.

The WA Police Comissioner said on the radio today that this should not effect those travelling in other States where that particular state has a law that a rego sticker has to be displayed, as this will not apply to WA vehicles.

My understanding was that the State laws in the State you are driving/travelliing in apply to everyone irrespective of what state they come from.

Hmmmmm............wonder if Sandgropers will be booked in those states for not displaying a sticker?????

all cop cars have the ability to check not only registration info but driving offences as well, whats more they can do it at 110 kph, just take a look in a road patrol vehicle next time you see it parked, the passenger seat is full of electronic components as well as onboard computers, the only reason they pull you over now is to check "condition" of roadworthiness of the vehicle, or boredom of the officer, they already know all the other details they have had this ability for about 6 years that I know of, the abolishment of the sticker is just another cost cutting excercise where the savings will not be passed on to the ever suffering taxpayer the same as the plastic bag saga in supermarkets, our food prices (on every item) has a 3% loading to pay for the plastic bags, this was placed on during the introduction of the plastic bag, why has this 3% not been passed back to the consumer, if we want a plastic bag now we must pay 25 cents for it our fuel has a 15% tax on the total cost to "fund" upgrades of roads and yet since it's introduction not one extra cent has gone in to road funding, scoots in to "general revenue" we pay an emergency services level to the tune of millions of dollars each year and yet vic fire services couldnt get through to each other, we have raffles and fundraisers here to subsidise our cfs, where's our money for the services theft in supermarkets attract's an 8% loading on all purchases but if theft goes down through better monitering then our grocery prices do not shrink accordingly, you mark my words the production of the stickers will save the gov millions but it will not improve our pockets any upon abolishment we are merely cash cows and we are here to be milked so just be ready for those cold hands come budget night!!! welcome to the nuthouse by the way!!!

Thanks for the welcome Dave. I think the stickers are paid for by part of the charges on the licencing renewal, so I suppose that saving will not be passed back to us either. What States are still using registration stickers? Have any others stopped using them? Bergholt

All the dropping of the rego sticker will do is increase the never ending line up at the RTA to do other business as they will also drop staff that once handled rego stickers . In a very short time if you are not computer literate then you will find that paying an account will be impossible. Take the cost of my rego transaction only last week . RTA sent Rego reminder along with a heap of other useless sale adverts telling me how to get my personalized and where to obtain plates from . Paid rego by BPay over the net RTA sent endorsed sticker back This involved at absolute best practice no less than 5 people just to give me a sticker for the windscreen. From my recent dealings with the RTA I doubt if they know anything about Best Practice Assessment so it's possible a whole army of people became involved in my Rego transaction If the RTA can send out advertisements for products they have the monopoly on (Number Plates) why isn't it possible to send in the same package a list of pending and current road rule changes made during the rego period . All this useless bum fodder sent out by the RTA is almost as silly as telstra advertising phones when they were the only one who had them. May be telstra has taken over the RTA.

One good thing to come out of it for the West Aussies is they can renew their registration online or other method from interstate and not have to worry about waiting for a sticker, as was pointed out to me by someone else.

In the past when travelling Oz they had to pay in advance to get their sticker in time, now they can wait until the deathknock with their hard earned cash and pay it just before the expiry or just after within the grace period.

Note:  We don't have the RTA in WA (did in the past) all police including traffic come under the main police umbrella, the vehicle rego's, licences etc all come under what was called the Dept of Transport, now called (wait for it) The Department of Planning and Infrastructure whatever that means.   Sheeesh !

Is NSW the only State that has a yearly safety inspection for vehicles over a certain age.After seeing some of the bombs driving on Queensland roads I see why the road toll is so high.Cheers.Ibbo.

I know that cairns has a pretty stringent certificate idea as my b.i.l. lives up there, I don't know how or when the inspections take place or how regular but I do know they are strict south aust. hasnt got one but they are talking about it, cant wait to get the junkers off the road

Hi Bergholt.  My Cruiser is registered in WA, as is my van.
The Cruiser's rego is due later this month, but my daughter is a bit slow in sending my mail out.
What is the website for the Transport Dept so I can pay it online.  I tried by phone last week, but that put me on hold for far too long.
So if I can do it online it would save the worry of it running out.
Although it won't matter if we don't get stickers anymore.  Will the other states understand if they can't see the sticker displayed on the windscreen?
Haven't the cops got better things to do than to be checking every car they see to check the rego of every car they pass, instead of a quick look at the windscreen?
I wonder who initiated this brain wave.  The cops or the govt?
Anyway Berholt, I'd be pleased if you can tell me the website.

I'm not sure about getting rid of stickers as its a good reminder that a licence is due and also an instant check by police to see if a vehicle is currently licensed. Cheers Liz

in NT rego checks are not required for the first 3 years for new vehicles then it is next 2 years . after that they are yearly. mind you i have seen mant bombs on the road so i am not sure the system works

takes about 15 seconds on an uniterupted police radio to do a "vehicle check" all coppers have radio's whether they are on nags or bikes or pushys, most of them just pull you over so they have got something to do I have 3 good long term freinds who are coppers so dont think I'm knocking them, we give each other heaps all the time, lazy bludgers they are LOL!!! cant handle a "real job" I've been paying all our regos on line for about 5? years now, never had a problem, it's done through www.ezyreg.sa.gov.au which I think is south australia specific but I am sure they would have a counterpart in other states, this can be done anywhere in australia because they give a reciept number as soon as the transaction is finished

Sounds like some commonsense is being used. As long as they adjust the "australian road rules" to keep in line it is a good thing. The Australain rules state that "A current registration sticker shall be affixed... blah blah blah" and in a town like Canberra where a great source of income is derived from random roadside rego checks of vehicles from any state while your vehicle is parked it may be difficult. Even if your car is registered it is still a $67 fine for not displaying a "Current" sticker, I mean we are nearly bankrupt and every $ counts......

I hope the WA Gov get the word out to other States Authorities about their new method, could be interesting if you get a ticket in another State how you get on. Would make an interesting court case, State Authority "in our State (non WA) everyone is required to display a sticker" end of story. WA driver "But we don't have them so how can we display one???" Other State "Too bad, our law doesn't make allowances for that, pay up or else". Hmmmm........not likely to happen I hope, but until all other States get the word out to their enforcement officers could be interesting for awhile.

I phoned them last week, but no one really answered the phone, just the tape recorder, and I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited .................... until I hung up in frustration, no, anger. I'll keep working on it. Thanks heaps. PS Another argument for national registration.
