This is my own 'discovery'. Making a Boiled Fruit Cake one day [ on Cape York,] I used Sour-sops instead of Pineapple. Makes a very moreish cake. Lucky if it lasts a day. Cheers, xina.

Sour-sops are a Fruit that I think belong to the same family, and look a lot like Custard Apples. [Don't forget to de-seed.] Cheers, xina.

Phew!!!!!!!! I thought you meant sour-sobs - you know, the weeds with the yellow flowers and the juicy stems that make your mouth pucker (Oxalic Acid).
Now THAT would make and interesting substitution.

i used to love sucking "sour sobs" until mum told me that dogs and cats piddle on them, perhaps that is what makes your mouth pucker

Yikes Dave...I reckon your mum and mine must have been pen friends..I got the same message.
I ran out of liquid once in making a boiled fruit cake, so used over ripe mangoes...squished out all the juices.
Was a magnificent yummy cake glazed with Galliano..
Eerr!!! that's about all I can remember...'Hic!'
