Can anyone tell me what the road is like from the great northern highway at Newman through Tom Price to coastal highway and on to Onslow is like please?

It's very good. All black top, just watch for mine-related traffic.
It's not a major highway, but it is better than some of Qld's major highways.
Just be aware of seasonal changes which can close or change road conditions without much warning, especially if there's been monsoon activity further north and west. The "wet season" is considered to run from October to the end of April. It gets hot and dry down that way, and very humid north of Pardoo if you're travelling north.

From Newman, through the range country, to the coastal highway is very scenic.
If you are travelling that area Oct-Dec, there can be some rather spectacular storms - lightning, localized rain, strong winds. These sometimes start bushfires that can become quite extensive.

I went from Onslow to newman. It's all good....
