has anybody put a turbo kit on their 5l hilux diesel?

G,day . I am going to attempt to get more power out of my old hilux 4wd as its thirstyand slow at the moment. My brother in law has a sim ilar hilux with an aftermarket turbo and the diference is amazing. Not only has he got about 30% more power, he gets better economy than me. Are there any tricks or traps I should know about? From all Reports, too much boost shortens the life of your motor, So I am going to fit a boost guage anda pyro meter(exhaust temp), and keep the boost below 10lbs.Has anybody fitted a kit themselves?I would apreciate your views. Bill I would consider the cost of altering the vehicle. That cost would buy a lot of fuel and the alteration will shorten the life of the current engine.
Maybe its time for the hilux to be replaced with something more suited to your current and future needs.

Thanks for the help. Its not going to cost that much as I have the turbo and all the bits, except the exhaust downpipe, and I will do the work myself. I was going to buy my self a hxj series landcruiser ute, but I am a bit attached to the old hilux as we have done a lot of miles together.I will try the turbo and see.Thanks, Bill

If your motor has done alot of work then you are pushinh your luck as far as durabilitly goes ,as it puts a lot more stress on the motor.
I done my cruiser years ago ,as it was using a lot of oil i rebuilt it first .

its a japan excnage motor done 150 thou k and doesn,t use oil but is woe fully underpowered. According to who you talk to , it will be ok. I am doing the injectors, and having the pump recalibrated by a diesel mech mate, so , hopefully, I am doing the right thing.Its either that or buy a hzj landcruiser. This is cheaper. Like I say , I am attached to the old toyo.

From my point of view, the answer is easy:
Keep your old toyo and get a cheap landcruiser.

Gee, Libby, you're an optimist. I've been looking around and "cheap LandCruiser" seems to be a contradiction in terms.

It would work but don't expect longevity from your motor.
The pistons, conrods and sometimes crankshafts are heavier duty in motors that have turbos......to take the extra pressure the turbo creates.
I wouldn't do it myself and I am a diesel mechanic!

Thanks. I think I will probaly go to a landcruiser , which has more power from the start.While the hilux has been a great vehicle, out in the rough stuff, evrybody has a cruiser, and they keep coming back for more. all the staionowhers and the mining comps use them , so they must be good.Might put the turbo on and sell the car. decisions, decisions. Bill

are you sayi ng that you have a landcruiser? I would like to find out a few more detailsand them before I commit to buy one. The hilux is adequate but slow at times, especially against the wind. I suppose you can only push a block of flats so fast. I had a turbo on my last 2.8 diesel, but it dropped a piston at 150k, so I am a bit reticent to put one on the 5l.I think I will get a diesel fitter to help me fit it, if I do go ahead. Thanks, Bill

Hi-lux is a great vehicle and I can understand why you are so attached to it, we had one ouselves for a while but not a patch on the cruiser
