I could be wrong but from memory Latitude is East/West and Longitude is North/South.
My Tom Tom makes the adjustment automatically when I enter the co-ordinates.

I am not clear on your meaning. Are you using eastings and northings (otherwise known as AMG or Australian Map Grid,) or are you putting S & E after your lat/long figures. If it is the latter then the same numerals apply - you just leave the "-" off the front of the latitude and put the S after it. Likewise if the longitude has a "+" in front of it you delete that and put E after the numerals.
If you are using AMGs then there is a very complicated formula for converting these to lat/long. It occupied a couple of lines in the manual we had to explain the subject. We did not bother with it as we had fed it into a computer programme.
My old GPS can be set to accept either input. When I enter either the Lat/long or the AMG I can change it to the other system and read the figure of the other system there. See if you can do that.
For those not familiar with the AMG system, it is the grid you find on the maps published by the national and state mapping authorities.
HI John, have a look at your manual for the unit, in there you will find instructions on how to set the nav description
it should give you a choice as to which one you want
if youhavent got the manual then do a google search and go to downloads then instruction manual

G'day Dav0, Thanks for that info, my Tom Tom has 3 settings as follows:-
When I wish to enter co-ordinates the Latitude automatically comes up with S and Longitude comes up with E. At the bottom of the screen I have the option to change the S to N or the E to W. hope I have not confused the issue too much.

G'day Dave0, yep I mess around with mine regularly,(my Tom Tom that is) 'tis the only real way to learn, for me any way. Stuff it up and hit reset or factory default and start again, besides I like playing with my new toys and I do learn a few things to boot, just wish I could remember what I learned. Need to keep it simple 'cause I am a simple lad.

Bonnie Lou - 1954 Also recorded by : Russ Morgan & His Orch.; The Deighton Family; Dan Zanes.
Im a bow-legged chicken, Im a knock kneed hen Never been so happy since I dont know when I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk Doing the Tennessee wig walk.
Hear a tune on the fiddle and my hearts aflow ??? Though Im broke and weary and my back is sore I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk Doing the Tennessee wig walk.
Put your toes together, your knees apart Bend your back, get ready to start Flap your elbows just for luck Then you wiggle and you waddle like a baby duck.
Come and dance with me honey, tap your toes and glide And well always be together side by side, I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk Doing the Tennessee wig walk

The Camps Australia Wide book gives the Co-ordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds, for example...
Isla Gorge Campground (pronounced "eye-la" by the way)
Lat 25 11 28 S Long 149 58 20 E
Latmeans latitude 25is 25 degrees 11is 11 minutes28is 28 secondsSmeans South
Longmeans longitude149is degrees58is minutes20is secondsEmeans East
To enter these in your GPS set it to Degrees Minutes and Seconds as suggested in the posts above. If you change the settings after entering the co-ordinates you will not need to re-enter them as the GPS will convert them for you.
Hope this is the information you were seeking and it helps. If you have any further queries or this is not the info you're looking for don't be afraid to ask. If you do, mention the brand and model, as other "forumites" may be able to help with information specific to that unit.
