We're about to head back East across the Nullarbor and we have heard that SA takes fresh fruit and veg off you at Ceduna (which is pretty bizarre, as WA takes them off you when you head west, what, do the two states get worried about sharing germs??). The link to the info on the SA govt website is broken, so I can't find out exactly what you lose. I assume all fresh stuff, what about sultanas or other dried fruit? What about honey, WA takes it off you, even though the supermarket at Kununnurra sold exactly the same brand (and it probably comes from China anyway). I'd rather give away stores like that before we start on the Eyre highway than have them taken off us and chucked in a bin.

Hi Guys , We came accross there in 08, if I can remember right it is the fresh stuff . Not like going the other way , like you said ,honey &/or any thing to do with it is a no no .The old potato sacks are out as well .
Best advise is to pick up a leaflett at the info at Norseman .That way if you have any no no,s you can pace your self & alough time to use them up .
Plenty of camps along the way & things to see .
PS. plenty of candy cars as well .have a safe trip .

we stayed at eucla one way and madura pass coming back.
Both had good showers. Eucla takes $1 for hot shower so put a gold coin inyour shower bag. Eucla also has a great camp kitchen.

Been through there recently, first time, and found (after) a tip
Any fresh fruit and veg is going to be taken, unless it is 'processed'. Cutting the potatoe and putting mayo on it, is classified as 'processed.
Honey they take, and any bags/boxes that had or could have had vegies in them.
Pot plants are out, basically any soil is out.
Just remember, they are doing their job, as best they can, and would have heard it all. The reasons are valid, but seem to be a 'shout into the wind'

They do have nice new boxes to replace the ones they take off you though!!!!
Give credit where credit is due. (You can't see my tongue in my cheek can you.)
I upset the guy. He looked in the fridge and swooped thinking he had honey, but it was maple syrup, so he backed off quickly.
Best tip I had was to cut up onions and put them in bags in the freezer. Same with tomatoes and fruit. As long as they are processed they are all right.

Fresh is bad at the checkpoints.
Veggies can be peeled, parboiled and frozen no worries.
Fruit boxes, those foam thingies are a no-no.
Honey is ok into SA but don't try to bring it back to WA even if you don't break the seal. DAMHIK. I reckon the checkpoint charlies were having peanut butter & honey sangas for weeks after we came through one trip.
The reason for the gap in the checkpoints, which BTW used to be larger when we were first doing the crossing (Ceduna & Norseman) was so that they wouldn't take any foodstuff from travellers entering the Nullarbor in case they got stuck part way (dirt road days). Cheers Neil

I once asked why the potatoes as they are root vegetables and not subject to fruit fly and they explained it was nematodes. The honey may be due to "foul brood" (I think, but only guessing)

If you would like a very un pleasant read,go to the Google thingy, enter ,potatoes over State borders and be in for a surprise.About the only thing that you can take over State borders are Rosy cheeked children. There are so many varieties of fruit and vegetables that are prohibited, truly mind boggling. Why is it that what one State accepts another wont.Time for one Government for the. whole country.I don't want to open up a political debate,I am trying to understand the reason for so many anomolies between States.Cheers.Ibbo.

I reckon we could hold a very long convention with fringe benefits to discuss and resolve recommendations on that one. It's been a source of wonder for me for years.
Vehicle registrations and road laws, driving licences and food and produce standards.
Road trains full of fresh fruit and veg cross borders every day. They've been inspected, passed and approved before leaving the market, and yet they still find the occasional fruit fly where it's not wanted. Cane toads have been found in Adelaide in fruit from Qld. Even snakes sneak in from time to time.
The Kununurra road block is very strict, the entries to SA are also firm, but honey is not such an issue in SA although they do produce tonnes of the stuff. I haven't done the Eucla road block from east to west.
Some small goods like salami may also be questioned in some places.
Safe and happy travel with or without your fruit and veg.

Travellers should also be aware of the "Riverland Fruit Fly Exclusion Area"
It is marked on the HEMA maps and there are signs on the main roads, but there are no road blocks.
They are just as strict with fruit and veg. and random searches ARE conducted my mobile inspectors.
The fines for bringing fruit into the area from ANYWHERE are HUGE, even if you are driving straight through, so be warned.
Cheers,
Peter
