My neighbour and I want to go skiing for about week in the Australian snowfields. I have never skied before (born and bred in West. Australia) and she has done very little. We are in our mid to late 60's, and reasonable fit (me overweight ) Anyway we do need some good advice on what time to go (not in school holidays) does anybody know if there are any groups we could join to go with maybe....We think we will be flying from Perth to Canberra and then to Perisher from there. All comments and suggestions would be gratefully received. Thank you Lorraine.

hi coming from perth to canberra you can get greyhound from canberra airport to the ski tube which is the train to perisher. its very expencive in the snow seasons try and do a package which includes ski hire and transport and accomadation you will find some great deals look up murrays coaches or transborder coaches on the net they have day trips from canberra with everything inclued for about $150 good value from mid july on woods till middle september is the best time to go. have fun and dont break any legs.buy snowdog.

Thanks Snowdog, I will check out those coaches. I really want to stay right on the snowfields, just to get that "winter snow experience". We plan on joining the "kiddie" learners group and maybe ski on their slope...So you think any-time between July and September should be a good time to go? I will also try to find the best oldies travel/ski insurance.....just in case Cheers Lorraine.

Hi there I go skiing quite often and I suggest you get on the Perisher Valley Web Site and look up 'womans week', beginner packages and 'on snow' accomodation.
The most convenient place at Perisher is The Valley Inn or The Man From Snowy River. They are a short walk to the lift/lesson area. The Ski Rider hotel is located at Wilsons Valley and there are often good deals staying with them. They have a free shuttle bus up to Smiggin Holes as well as Perisher on a regular basis. They also do ski hire.
Try to avoid 'The Station' at Jindabyne if you don't have a car as it is out of town and has a lot of young people staying there, that's why it is cheap!
Also check out Charlotts Pass, very nice and well set up for beginners and 'oldies'.
There are very good packages for beginners, take out the 5 day one, or if you have lots of money, go for the private lessons.
Best time to go is mid Aug (that is peak) to most of Sept (Fringe season). It can be nice and warm, Spring skiing and the weather is generally more 'user friendly'. July can be cold, wet and blizzardly.
DO NOT GO WITHOUT INSURANCE!!! If you get injured the cost is horrendous to get an ambulance to Cooma.
You will enjoy it and have a ball.

Hello Allara, We are booked into the Corrobee Lodge from Sunday 22nd August to Sunday 29th August. Fairly basic accommodation I think. But good enough for us I hope. We have taken out insurance....just hope we won't be needing it....I am quite excited
