After nearly 400.000 klms we had to put the old Commodore down and purchase a 06 Rodeo TD Auto.   We tow an 80's 14ft Viscount Seabreeze, and the one thing we never did with the Commodore was check how many klm's to the litre we were getting.  (Odomoter had given up the ghost ages back before the van).  Is anyone towing with some similar setup who can give us their figures so we can check it against the Rodeo?  Last trip with the Rodeo we got 11.4ltr/100klm, I would imagine the Commodore would chew a fair bit more.   Thanks in advance.   cheers

G,day there Pete I tow with a VY 6cyl sedan but have never taken a fuel account, I believe if i keep it in great nick the car should peform. So much comes into litres per K, head wind tail wind ,side wind wether i have wind all types of wind. Some days the car is heavy and the van is heavy, so i just fill her up and away i go. DAVE

Dave is quite right when it comes to there being many variables when it comes to towing but I do believe one should have a "handle" on the fuel consumption particularly on long stretches between refuelling opportunities such as the Barkly Highway in NT. Regular monitoring will give one a feel for the effects of headwind and load. I have come across people who have run out of fuel and others who have come uncomfortably close as a result of poor trip planning.

On speed and fuel consumption, John Eggenhuizzen of Tow-Ed says that there is little to be gained in fuel consumption by travelling under 90 kph.  He bases this on his findings from leading caravan tag-alongs.  My own experience generally confirms this but this is a generalisation and there would be exceptions, e.g. strong headwind perhaps.

Most pertol vehicles will return consumption figures at 90 - 95kph of about double the usual non towing figures. From a VR Holden at that speed you would expect to use around 17 - 18litres/ 100km.

most people i talked to going around average between 6 and 8 ks to the litre, my self included. this is regardless of the vehicle.

I have an AU Falcon on LPG and Petrol (duel fuel) about 20/22 litres per 100 kl about $1400/1600 per 100kl on gas at around 70 cents per litres. Go on petrol and about 14 litres per 100 kl about $1800 per 100 kl at $1.30/40 but has more power on petrol then gas mainly on hills. I am towing a 15 foot evenew. But its good if you get low on gas just switch to petrol always have some petrol in the tank to get you through to the next gas fill up or where you can get it cheap. Gas verious in price manly in country areas 70/80 cents per litres sometimes dearer. In the city around 60cents per litres.
