We are thinking of a new tv for the van. What is the general thoughts on tv-dvd. tv with built in dvd or tv with seperate dvd? have heard stories of the built in type not lasting very long. Thanks.

Was advised that when looking at tv-DVD combos to check for ability to have other appliances plugged in such as computer, card reader to look at photo, etc

As you're talking about a small set for use in the van, I'd consider going for the combo as these don't cost much more than a TV (only) and are very convenient. (That's if small TV(only)s are even still available?). Whether or not you need a card reader and computer connectivity depends on your planned usage. These functions are probably available on most sets anyway.
I recently purchased a "cheapie" (under $300 - digital/analogue) TV/DVD from JB HiFi and the set works fine. I use this set at home in my bedroom as well as in the van. All the small sets that I looked at were 12volt units with a small power supply provided to enable 240volt operation.
One suggestion, check before buying that the set has a reasonably wide viewing area in front of the screen. I made the mistake of not doing this and have to adjust the brightness when I view it from different angles.

Hi there,
I look forward to how you get on with this. I have an 'Orion' TV with the tape player I bought about 30yrs ago and it still goes strong, but is not digital. It lives in the van and has a 'T' shaped aerial that I need to rotate to tune in, or in some parks I can plug into their aerial.
Looking forward to what you decide on, should save me a lot of time doing the same exercise.
Cheers

For the cost they are as good as anything else out here. Seen them in Coles last week 158 don't go to a van or motorhome supplier they don't only see you coming they send a cab for ya.
The one I got from Big W was 198 and has USB SD Card lreader Component connections for computer, same as my $900 home entertainment unit

f you have a laptop computer have you thought of an analog/digital stick. I use one to watch tv on the laptop plus you can do any of the other things like watch DVD's etc

We recently (Nov 2009) upgraded from a 15" LCD TV plus a DVD player, to a 15" LCD TV with inbuilt DVD. So far, no problems at all but it's only seen about two months of action. Happy so far. It's a "Celestial" brand.
Hope this helps... Big Al... towing the world's longest 12 ft caravan.

Thanks to all, we have gone with a seperate tv/dvd. The inbuilts are $100+ more than the single tv & that will buy a seperate dvd.Inbults have limited provision for extra items if you need them , may not be as convenient in some ways but have heard of a lot of inbuilts failing , guess a personal choice. Thanks.

Hi Justcrusin, thats the way I went, purchased a very compact DVD player from GO-LO for $39 for the van. Ive found $40 Dvd players work quite well & at that price if something goes wrong after 12Mths warranty who cares. All DVD players will give trouble eventualy usually the Laser assy packs up & to costly to repair. Daryl

Which van are you talking about? I have seen vans that a 15 or 16" set had to be shoe horned in. Measure your proposed spaceand do some tyre kicking.
