It is free and works very well.
You can upgrade the service for a fee of course, but we find the "free" basic service more than adequate.

The one time we took a laptop away with us, we used Skype and it was very good.

Not entirely free, it uses some of your MB download, as does yahoo, but not a lot unless you stay talking to somebody for hours.

We use skype nearly every day to communicate with our daughter and now on the road will communicate with son at home. Sometimes a little laggy if the connection is poor but a godsend for families that are apart

As others have stated, Skype to Skype video is free & works great though it can use up your download meg's if you chat too long. We have found the quality is a bit better than MSN & the video screen can be made bigger too.
We also use skype for our normal phone. For about $60 a year you we have unlimited calls to home phones in Aus. We wouldn't want to use our mobile for the hour long calls we make to family.
Also overseas calls are very cheap, Hylda rings S Africa and from memory it was well under $10
We put $30 credit into skype to cover the odd overseas call & any calls to mobile or 1300/131 which arn't free. (though we normally use our mobile for those ones.
Cheers Jon

I have skype, it is free but does use up a lot of your MBs. I have cut back on using it for that reason. Was getting to my quota to fast.
But would use it if needed while travelling, will be so handy.

How on earth do you get offered russian brides. Its like a phone call but you are registered and so are the people you want to talk to and you are connected, sort of like messenger on hotmail.
So I thought only the people you have a connection with can get through to you.
