Any comments about the Camec/coastrv type of plate and cups holders that are either 4 or 6 setting? Our next trip is a long one through West Coast and back up the Centre. I am going to rearrange the van cupboards and as I am vertically challenged I was wondering how efffective they are in protecting the crockery. We won't be going off the black top but even roads around Cairns (home) are rugged at times! Very excited as we will be leaving at the end of April. Thanks for any suggestions

I use Corelle "china" and just pack them in plastic box with thin bubble wrap between them, non slip rubber matting I think would do the job too. The bubble wrap was less expensive, in fact it was my favourite price as I saved it from some packaging.
Corelle is very robust and I have carried out a scientific drop test () from mid body height onto a concrete slab and the only damage was a slight chip. This highly scientific test will probably carried out again at some time in the future. (I'm a clumsy bast&rd)

Darling we use Corelle and stack it on top of each other in a draw and never a problem.

Jim I've performed the same scientific test on a stack of 6 corelle bowls onto the ground (just dirt not concrete) and not one of them cracked. They didnt even have anything between, although I usually put a bit of non-slip stuff in between each plate in the van just to stop them moving about.
I keep them in one of the drawers under the kitchen sink, so far no problems.

I do the same as Gerty just put them in the drawer with a bit of non slip in between so they don't move never had any breakages Helena.

Me too, same as Gerty, all sitting on (not of) kitchen table all ready to go in van. The non slip rolls are really cheap at the CHEAP shops. Then cut into right sizes.

AH! HW, sadly we've found that all non-stick stuff isnt the same as other non-stick stuff! The cheapest we tried, from the $2 shop, slid around, simply didnt work. It was a bit better when used double. Bunnings is probably the best place, or carpet/rug dealers as they sell it in large widths for under floormats.
Does anybody know where you can buy non-slip place-mats? I've seen some somewhere, that were a bit heavier than the drawer-liner stuff, but now that I'm looking for them they've disappeared. Clark Rubber has that heavy rubber stuff but only in black.

I made up a set of plate racks, similar to a normal drying rack.
We came across some mini racks at a hardware store & paid $1 each for them.
The racks are bent to suit the particular plate or bowl & fixed to a ply base plate that is in turn screwed in position in an overhead cupboard adjacent to the eating area. The base plate has a slot cut into it to help position the plate/bowl.
In over 12 years we have never broken a plate.
The pic attached shows a china dining set that we initially used. It has been replaced by a lighter corelle ware set.
We also use $2 shop non slip matting to hold a few noodle & desert bowls on the lower shelves .. no probs.
We use the non slip matting under our toaster, elect jug & hotplate on a benchtop. Has never moved ... but we don't do off road.
ps. In relation to the drop test in earlier posts .. we were in the local supermarket where a customer dropped a corelle plate on the concrete floor ... big bang & fine shards of the glass plate went everywhere. But they might well sustain dropping onto a timber caravan floor.

Try Big W and Kmart Gert. I got my non slip stuff from there and it's been good so far. You can always cut it up to make place mats too. About 4 different colours from memory.
I did use the stuff from the $2 shops in the old van but it didn't really do the job efficiently, it still slid around and the matting bunched up as well.
You pay a bit more for it in BW and KM but it's worth it in the long run I think

Cupie, do you mean you leave the toaster, electric jug and hotplate out on the benchtop when you are travelling and it doesn't move. If so that is good. Wouldn't have thought of leaving them out like that.

I stack mine in the cupboard below the sink. I use the principle of heavy at the bottom, light up the top. Non-slip matting is available in place mats, coasters and rolls to be cut to size.
Cupie if you can stack your plates as neatly as in the picture you've got too much space in your rig!
You are right ... too much space & the temptation to fill it up with all sorts of stuff.

Yep .. that's right.
Left them there by mistake once & they didn't fall off. So they stay there permanently now. Don't botrher to empty the jug either. (They are on a non slip mat)
Mind you we don't do off road & have a tandem axel load sharing suspension van.
Try it & let's know how you go.

Mate, I yield to that temptation and I've got b#*ger-all space in my little rig.
Latest addition is an Easy Cook 5 litre "Billy". (I don't have a hot water system) I'll have to store it on the floor to travel, along with the Easy Cook oven and the breadmaker and the buckets etc, etc.

Thanks everyone for your helpful hints especially for taking the time to post some piccies too. By the way I bought my non slip matting by the metre from Clark Rubber and it was a cheaper way than the small rolls from Big W.

Thanks for the piccies I like the idea of the white veggie racks on top of each other. It might be the way to go for me. At 5 foot nothing unless I get the Tommee Turtle out of the cupboard I can't reach into the overhead cupboards above the sink/stove. At least I can see what in there then. Cheers Trish

I found it was a good way to use the space. My cupboards are quite high but I'm 5'4", so it is tippy toes sometimes.

Wow, theres some great ideas in this thread.
I was just sitting here complaining about, "wheres my van" and I thought, why don't I go & get some bits and pieces to stock it up.
But Im not so sure, I don't know the exact sizes of the cupboard internals & don't want to get stuff that doesnt fit or work.
I like the idea of that non slip matting for inside the kitchen cupboards/pantry. I'm wondering where I could buy it in a big roll to cut to size when the van gets here. I imagine it would be cheaper this way too.

We bought rolls of it and cut it to our cupboards sizes, ours came from chickenfeed but we've seen it in Big W, K-Mart and many other stres of this type.

Chicken feed is shops like The reject shop, Trev's, the $2.00 shops, you will find them in just about every town in Tassie and in the last couple of years they have been opening here in Victoria...

Don't feel bad Biggles. Until I went to Dalby last weekend I'd never seen or heard of Chicken Feed either. Just another discount junk shop with some useful stuff, including camera cards at a good price. There's Sam's Warehouse, Overflow which is also part of Sam's. These all have the non-slip by the roll, but the quality does vary.

You'll be amazed at all the useful things you can find in there Jack. Not only non-slip matting, but we have a nice little broom, several buckets and bins and food containers, and a great folding laundry hamper, all from different versions of "The $2 Shop".

I have bought a lot of stuff from our Reject Shop. Same as you Gerty, brooms etc. I have just bought some nice can baskets for the cupboards and the non slip mats are cheaper in there than Big W etc.
Another thing ours sells here is Finish dishwashing detergent, at least $3-$4 cheaper than Coles and Woolies, I always stock up on that.
