hi, i need some help, can't make up my mind on what vehicle to buy. we can't afford to buy new so have been looking at early to mid 2000 models. at the moment i am looking at a 2005 toyota prado turbo diesel, 3 ltr with low klms and a 2002 landcruiser turbo also with reasonable klms. it will have to tow about a 20 to 23 ft van, so, will 3ltr tow with economy or will we need 4+ ltrs ??? any help appreciated, cheers, rob.

We tow a 21.5 ft van with a Ford Ranger 3ltr turbo diesel and we don't even know the van is there. Brilliant tug in our opinion.

G'day mate, for me it would be the Prado diesel. 180lt fuel capacity is a great option, parts are plentiful and the product itself if well proven. Any of the techies on the forum will tell you about weight distribution setup's and the type of hitch to suit your van etc.........the rest wont be a problem for a Prado ( or landcruiser) Will it be a manual or auto? towing a 31 foot fifth wheeler with a Landrover Defender, 4 tons fully laden. Bit slow on the hills but I havn't had it chipped up yet and everything is new and tight. Still only using 16 litres per 100 kls though which I think is not bad.

gday ozi, leaning a long way towards the prado with an auto box, i would prefer a manual box but my partner likes auto. so i am keeping the peace. rob.

We love our Prado... BUT its maximum towing capacity is 2500k's. A van over 20 ft is likely to weigh more than that loaded. Vans with tandem axles can have 400k's of your own stuff/water/etc on top of the tare weight, so think carefully, and ask about weights in your decision.
Our choice of van was based on what Mr D. felt comfortable for the Prado to tow.(2006 auto diesel turbo) As you can see its a 16ft pop-top.

The Defender 130 has a gross vehicle mass of 7 tons and only weighs 2. You can legally tow 3.5 tons and carry nearly 1.5 tons in the tray
