I have been emailing greedy Councils for years in and around Qld In regard too this BIG problem.....And never recieved an answer even once ..They prefered too call it Camping. With heavy signs theatening heavy penalties for having the cheek to rest up for the night..So's one can make it too the next caravan Park..Hence their cut of the profits.They don't care whether one is tired or not. I know this for a fact..Due to speaking to former Counciliers
As long as people do not abuse it..I feel that we should be allowed to stay over night if we want.at rest area's.....How say you all ?

yes, I agree with what you are say. I would like to know what the councils call "camping". What is difference if you stopped on main road and slept in vehicle or parking on main road with nobody inside it. You can sleep in vehicle during day no problems but come night no way.

I have a printed a4 sheet (see pic) had this for years in the van and never had to use it, and I would use it if asked to leave a site, we always stop wherever we want, have never been stopped by overzellious council employees.

I did add just a little more as follows continuing on at the end of the first paragraph:

I carry 6 of them, if the council officer refuses to sign I stay put.
Another option is to tell them you are the only driver and you are drunk, if they do not believe you phone the cops then very quickly drink half a bottle of whiskey.
Ask cops to bring a breath test kit with them

Well we have been tossing up whether to go north or.over the west, the more I see this sort of thing it turns me away from qld..
My younger brother had a run in with one of thoes "get going mate or Ill fine you" brother told him in no unsertain manner where to go. said he would get the police , brother reply Bullsh.........t, half hour later he came back with the police, lots of words were said, police told brother he could stay there, and told the ".would be....." to go away and leave this chap alone or he would book HIM for harasment.. true story....

Mate the keys don't have to be in the ignition, they only have to be accessable to you and you be drunk and in the vehicle, unless there is also a sober person in the car that can claim to be the person in control of the vehicle.

Well would you believe SA is building parking bays everywhere. I think they're for the long haul truck drivers to rest, but there's enough room for a couple of happy camping nomads. I may have to test them out on my escort (not that sort of escort) duties. There are no amenities, but a few bushes should handle that, and there's a little shelter with seats and table. There could be more amenities for free campers and travellers. It can be a l-o-n-g way between roadhouses. It seems every state has its own level of respect for the travellers and truckies, varying from very helpful and accommodating, to "not in our state". It's making our job a bit tricky to plan. All part of the experience. I do carry a dunny digger in case I have the urge to take the rolls for a run.

If you think Queensland is bad try Victoria. I have found Queensland offer a lot of free spots and most country towns in Qld are pleased to see travellers. One thing I have to mention when we demand spots to stop is how these spots get abused, Home Hill comes to mind. If not by nomads but by Back Packers. We cant have one rule for them and one for us. Another thing I have noticed is how people go to pains to say how they leave free camping sites cleaner than when they got there, what happens to the garbage they take out? it gets put in bins at the first rest stop they come to and next thing people complain about over full bins at rest stops. Before I get jumped on I am not say all do this but think about it.

Travellers usually get the blame for trash strewn rest areas but it is not always them that make the mess.
What the council may need to do is make their bins more CROWPROOF!
Crows (not the SA kind ) have to take the blame for spreading much of the rubbish in search of food.
Having said that, the travellers should not dump rubbish in remote area bins that they could easilly take to a town bin.

Camping spots are a little different than rest spots, Old mate...And my rubbish usually is put in a Coles bag...And I figured rubbish bins are for just that.....Rubbish

I think I understand the point you are trying to make, however, your thought attends to the wrong end of the problem, why are the bins full, because someone picked up the rubbish. Why was there rubbish on the ground, this is Australia, not asia, Australians don't throw rubbish on the ground, do they?
It all comes back to the disipline or lack there of amoungst just a few. So what do you do, I know what I do.
