Not for around half a century.
When I was a lad we used a ferret very succesfully on rabbits in the Texas Inglewood area.
Only problem was that after a few hours work, it must have caught a couple of kittens in a warren & stayed down for a sleep. We left the bird cage carrier with the door open dear the hole that he had gone down. When we returned a few hours later, around dusk .. there it was curled up in the bottom of the cage. Phew!

I had ferrets as a kid. They were a pair named Dave and Mabel. There was a pic of me with a belt full of rabbits and one ferret poking its head out of a hole in the front of my jumper (I used to carry them around up my jumper) and the other was standing on my shoulder with its front paws up on my head... wish I still had the piccy it would make a terriffic avatar. Sometimes I think kids miss out on a lot today....

The only one that I had experience with was a beautiful gold colour and was like a kitten .. crawling up your leg & such .. but beware .. couldn't move quickly near it or it would latch on like a snake striking, with those vicious front teeth.

Several years ago I was staying at the Bondi Swiss Grande Hotel & looked out off the balcony to see a person walking along the footpath with a ferret on a lead!

As kids we had ferrets, well, Dad did, we would play with them as pets.
One day one ran up my trouser leg, he must have thought it was christmas with what he found!
I still bear the scar, not that I have been able to see it for a while, , must get back on that diet.

Best bet when handling ferrets is some "nackie" twine around the trouser legs,
