we've tried channels 1,2 and 18, but nothing , although we can hear other people,
im thinking too many houses in the way, i think we should be ok on the ship though
which is only 250 meters or so long, i think..

Hi Milo, I would ask the shipping company if you can use them on board b4 your trip.
u may not be able to because of all their equipment on board

If you take them on your cruise, don't try to use them in other countries. Check with NZ if the equipment is type approved for use in NZ. All other countries have different uses for the Oz UHF CB bands so you could loose them if you are caught with them in your possession over there..

I would be surprised if they were of limited use on a cruise ship if you were inside &surounded by steel as the range would be very limited.

There is more to blocking radio waves than physical items in the line of site. You also have to take reflected signals into account. The earths surface can cause these signals.
You all have seen ghosts on the TV that are caused by signals reflecting off hills and other objects. With radio signals these reflected signals can cancel the main signal if they arrive out of phase with each other. If the reflected signal arrives half a wave length behind the direct signal it can reduce the strength of the signal in the receiver to the point that it is too weak to be received.
When you are standing close together there is no problem talking between two transceivers. The earth (ground) is far enough from the direct signal for the reflected signals not to be a problem. However the further you walk away from each other, the greater the clearance you need between the direct line of site and the ground. It is all explained in this link.
You may have experienced this yourself. You will be travelling out in the bush. Your friend is following. You can see him in your rear view mirror but you can't communicate. However some time laterwhen you get into undulating country and you are both on bits of rises but further away you can talk to him. The reason you could not communicate in the first instance is explained in that on Fresnel zones.

Unless you intend to use them when you return I'd suggest you take them back to see if you can get a refund. Don't waste your time/luggage allowance by taking them with you.
They may be useful (back home) for guiding a rig into a park site. (perhaps?)

Had a similar problem with my H/H units even standing next to the mates vehicle they didn't pick up his transmission . Mine came a pack of 4 and all were the same .
Talking H/H to H/H they work fine .
So does anyone know what the problem is why it won't pick up other units they aren't kids sets they are at the top end of the range

I had a set of the Uniden .5 watt UHF's & whilst they worked for a few months, range was limited and at times noisy & distorted. I now have 2 GME 2 watt UHF radios and they work perfectly. At $89 each delivered to your door - good value.
