Today I did something I've never done in my life before.
I dobbed in someone with an unrestrained toddler in the back of their car.
I rang the police and reported them.
The woman who answered the phone was just as horrifed as I was..although she's probably heard a lot worse.
Would you do the same?

You done good Beth. The Police can't be everywhere, and if people don't speak up and "LAG", then the irresponsible among us would have a free-for-all at our expense. If that person was talking on the phone while driving and slammed into your car what would you do? You see someone driving erratically what would you do? Take diversive action and go another way? That leaves the erratic, irresponsible driver to kill another road user. There comes a time when we have to speak up. In all the miles I've done, my greatest fear is to be the first on the scene of a crash before the dust settles. We have to be responsible for ourselves for our own actions, while protecting ourselves from the less responsible.

Good on you Beth - unrestrained children have no chance if involved in an accident or even if the driver has to slam on the brakes suddenly. Maybe a trip for the driver through a paediatric trauma ward might bring them to their senses??

I agree with everything said already. Some people don't deserve to have Kids.
Cheers,

Yes we would. Years ago in Townsville, we pulled up next to a car with three kids in the back seat who were not in seatbelts and were standing up. When myywife said, 'Don't you value your kid's lives?', the female driver replied, 'They're not my kids', and then drove off.
Sorta left us shaking our heads.

I'd mind my own business.....
Except in the case of small children locked in a parked car, I'd certainly act then.

Please don't take this as a shot Jim but I can't see the difference between children unrestrained and locked in a parked car, both can mean serious injury to the children.....

Well I went off to bed last night and look what I find this morning.
I have no regrets about 'lagging'. When it comes to a childs safety and welfare, no matter what the situation, someone has to look out for them if their parents are too stupid!
Lyn-n-ken, I had no idea how to contact the police, so I googled Qld police. It was then a toss up between Crime Stoppers or Policelink. After reading the details on both, I decided on Policelink. 131444. The woman on the phone was entering it as Crime Stoppers, so either would have done. When You think about it, it is a crime. http://www.police.qld.gov.au/
Never ring 000 unless "a life is threatened, a crime is happening now, or when the event is time critical, such as a fire."
BobnBev, don't get me started on people who smoke in cars with children. My daughter is one of them.

We work for the emergency services, as do many others on here, and when a head hits a windscreen, theres not a lot of places to go after that in a lot of circumstances.
Its amazing, our generations grew up with no seatbelts but since the law come in all those years ago, we have been sticklers for doing them up each and every time we sit in the car.
Kids deserve the best chances we can give them.

Good on you, maybe it will have saved a childs life if she is brought to heel.
Many years ago in Brisbane I was following a sedan heading north along Lutwyche Rd when it clipped the kerb and flipped onto it's roof.
We got the lady out through the drivers window and she started screaming that her baby was ON the back seat.Unrestrained. Talk about heart in mouth.
She was extremely lucky, there was so much bedding, blankets and pillows soft toys etc. the baby was fine.
I bet she decided a baby seat was the way to go.
I expect you think did you or did you not do the right thing.
I would think most people would applaud you for having the guts to do that.

I was a little iffy about it, Yuglamron, but thought, if there was an accident and that child was killed, I'd never forgive myself. Because I could have prevented it.
At 19 I did a similar thing Yuglamron. My eldest was a baby..1973, pre-baby capsules. He was in a heavy cane bassinet on the back seat. All you could get in those days was some sort of meshy thing to go over the bassinet.
I was driving through the suburbs, so not fast by any means, and as I came over a hill I found the cars had all stopped in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and the bassinet tilted forward. I jumped out mid traffic, opened the back door and he was still in the bassinet, all atangle with bedding. It had wedged up against the back of the front seat. He was fine! Not a peep out of him! Frightened the life out of me though!
After that we made some sort of belt effect to hold the basket in place.
And still to this day, I think of it if I happen to go over that same hill.
