As of tomorrow I'm an independent, accredited oversize pilot. I'm escorting a bulldozer D9 from Tailem Bend to Adelaide, wide, high and heavy. Well, a neighbour put me in contact with the haulier who needs a pilot. My former boss has gone underground with my pay for 3 month's work. So I'm putting the word out that I'm an independent operator. Next month I'm upgrading my accreditation to work in WA, so there'll be no stopping me.

Sad to hear you've been done like that Chris, I don't like your chances getting your money, there's probably a whole bunch of creditors on his tail ahead of you. Maybe you should contact the Tax Office to check where you stand. He may have claimed to have paid you, also a good chance to dob him in.
Try to "sus" out any future contractors, there's more where he comes from.
Do you have any documentation, especially his ABN. Don't deal with anyone who doesn't have or won't give you their ABN. Don't do any "cashies" that's a recipe for trouble.
Seek advice from your accountant, if you don't have one you should if you're doing contract work.

Gidday Chris
Mongrels, that's a kind word I can use for the low life who rip people off.
We contract for the work we do. We have a registered partnership, and an ABN number.
Before we take on any "tour of duty" we have both parties sign off on our terms and conditions. We invoice the owners who have contracted us on a weekly basis, (that's in the agreement) and fees go into our bank account with 24 hours of invoice.
No payment we would simply lock the joint up and leave the keys with the cops. Luckily that has never happened. The agreement scares them enough.
Even when we have worked for wages, a written agreement is in place, or a letter of offer.
That's the thing now, without a paper trail, the dodgy brothers will excel.
Hope that helps Chris and good luck.
Cheers & beers

Good luck Chris,
There is nothing that upsets me more than to be "let down" by someone who doesn't honour their responsibilities.
When I have had a client who is struggling, I always ask them to give me their intended payment plan. I then go on to tellthem to be sure that they can honour it, because if they do not do the right thing, look out, no mercy!
Have been let down very few times in the past 30 years.
I hope everything works out well for you, good on you.
Not too sure about the "oversize pilot" didn't know you could fly an airplane?

Makes me bloody angry to hear that, the tax office may be the best option for you, it may not get you your money, but will put the bastard in the tax spotlight and hopefully cause him grief. with these sort of people there is no reasonable legal recourse to assist us Little people,
Where i worked about 25 years ago, one of my customers who had a small engineering business, had a cashflow problem, needed about 30,000 dollars to keep business running,
he had be chasing a client who owed him over 60,000 $ but just would not pay, he had a history in the industry, of not paying until he was on the courts doorstep, then he would make a offer to settle for a lesser sum.
My customers daughter was married to a member of one of the bigger bikie clubs ???
he took it on his own back to see if he could help his father in law out of his financal difficulty. One sunday morning at about 5am 7 or 8 Harley Davidsons pulled up outside the clients house. only two knocked on the door, when he answered, they Politely explained the difficulties his father in law was having. and if only he would pay the outstanding debt then his F.I.L. would be able to keep the doors open, and not have to put off his staff .
WELL !! i don't know why but the following friday debt was paid in full by Bank cheque !!
every time i hear of a story like yours i like to think back to those days. it makes me feel good ?? So you do all you can to get your money from that pric [ oops penis dazren

Wow! Thanks everyone! Your support is overwhelming. An "escort pilot" does not fly hookers to outback mining camps. I've sent him accounts to his email address as agreed. I've set it up to receipt, and I can't say what happened to the previous editions, but he hasn't opened the email with the latest statement. I've only done 4 jobs for him since March, but one of them was to Moranbah in Qld, @ $1.20 per km. It's not hard to go it alone. I don't want to be flat out, but consistent work would be good. I'm doing a mail out to heavy transport mobs and other pilot managers who may need extra helpers in a pinch. Once the reputation is out there among those in the trade, it only takes word of mouth and slip out a few business cards and posters and the work will come. It's a great network. It can get really busy out of Adelaide with stuff going to Roxby Downs, mines all over Oz, wind farm towers and turbines, houses and portable accommodation (dongas), heavy machinery, mining equipment, heavy machinery and large structures go all over the country. The rat boss is out and about, but not answering his phone or opening his emails. His day will come. He's getting a bad reputation for poaching work from other pilots and not paying his bills, so the noose is getting tighter. Just let "Bucket Mouth Thiel" loose on the job, and his days are numbered. Thanks for the advice everyone. I have had businesses based on sub-contract before, but I've never had a problem getting the cash I've worked for, no matter how little it was. As a "freelance journo" the emphasis is on FREE, but even the pittance was paid on time by the media I sold my work to. Once again, thank you for your support. I really feel encouraged.

Hey Chris, can you check with the companies you worked for to see that they have paid him (the worm) I know it is a long shot but you never know also it will alert them to his "ethics" (or lack thereof). Apart from that is their any point trying to contact the Department of Labour & Industry or whatever they are called now?? Ombudsman??

If he is earning anything interesting the tax folk are always interested. They may be good allies especially if he is doing dodgy dealings.ie not disclosing earnings.

That's alright Mary, I know you weren't yelling at me. I do have an ABN for him, but I don't know how far I can go checking with the ATO. Checking the haulage mob will probably be a waste of time as that would be confidential. He gets the work and farms it out, and the deal is between him and them. I'm the last in line on the transport "food chain". We're usually an after-thought even though they can't go anywhere without us. Funny game. Yeah I reckon Karma will get 'im or other transport mobs he's p!ssed off. The old going 'round, comin' 'round works good for me.

I was out that way between Barcy and Emerald on the way to Moranbah last month, escorting a steel structure from Port Adelaide. I sometimes get a cheeky bugger telling me to get back in the kitchen or to get off the radio all together, as I instruct the truck driver of what might give him grief. Someone always comes back and tells them off because, "She's working, and you're not!" Oh, there's always some colourful language associated with that mouthful, but I'm too much of a lady to write it here. (And if you believe that you've been out in the bush too long) I never claim to be a lady, but I am all woman though. It's reassuring how much respect is out there in trucky land for the girls in the industry. I always say I can't demand respect, I have to earn it, and in this business I'm earning it well.
