I just bought a new campervan, a hj one ton cab /chassis with a pro built pop top camper on the back. It has 202 red motor andruns on gas and petrol.It seems to be in g/c with a lot of extras, such as dual batterys, aircon in cab,andis wired for 240 and 12v.It has an electrolux gas /12v/240 fridge which seems to work on 240(haven,t tried it on gas or 12v yet). Has anybody got any idea what sort of petrol consuption the 202 will bring.its only done 40000klms since rebuild, reciepts suplied.I got it at auction on Townsville and drove it home today. Seems to go well.Have to get a gas cert for change of rego.Have a look at the photos, and tell me what you think. Bill
The old 202 was a good donk. It replaced the legendary 186. As far as fuel consumption I can only gauge it on a couple of vehicles I drove in the Police in the early 80s. One was a sedan with the 202 and it only needed fuel now and again. The other was a ute with a 202 and it had a steel prison box attached to the back. Dont know what the thing weighed but you could see the fuel gauge dropping before your eyes.
I think that with a combination of gas and fuel you should be ok with that rig. As with all rigs a head wind will test your economy.

Looks the Ducks Guts bill.
As long as it is reliable then I would not worry about fuel consumption too much and those motors are a simple set up and are easily serviced and repaired. However they last well so repairs other than servicing will not be a big problem.
Hope you have many great trips in the old girl.

Thats the problem- where do you put the tinnie? I have thought about an inflatable, or perhaps a canoe. I must admit, even with atinnie on the front of the 4wd, I only used it twice in 9 weeks.So this might be a good compromise.The motor has done just 45000klms, according to paperwork that came with the car.Maybe I am getting soft, but I like a bit of comfort in my "old" age.It will be fun trying......

Looks good Bill, I don't think I would tow with it though, might be too much weight on the back, or has it been used for towing before?
I have heard many others say they took their tinnie along for the trip and hardly ever used it, opportunity, weather etc. Perhaps somewhere to carry your rods for a bit of beach/jetty fishing now and then, or hire a small boat with an outboard when you need to?

Had a fair bit to do the 202 motors in my eary years and the only fault I can really think of that was a 202 fault was they would drop the top off number 6 piston (drove one about 200km like that one night, as long as I slowly accerated the top would stay with the skirt, when it got too fast and I backed off it would rattle and clank until I put thee foot down again), another fault with all holdens is the gear on the bottom of the distributor would strip. Looks the goods though Bill cheers blaze ps the other good thing about holden red motors was every body had a spare in the back yard and you could pick up a good one for $100

I am in the same mind about theboat. I didn,t use my tinnie much on the last 8 week trip. But I will be taking it and the 4wd to the cape in Oct, at the end of the tourist season. My nephew, and his parner, who is a Thursday islander, have just had a new daughter that I would like to see , and a trip tp the top is always fun.The van has a towbar, and I will think about getting a 4m tiinie on a trailer , later.We will see what the fuel consuption is.The cheap parts ans the availiability of spares did affect my desision to buy.They are simple vehicles, and this one seems to be in good nick.Thanks for the input.Bill

I'm the last person who can give an experienced fisherman like Bill any advice but I'm inclined to think that a car topper may be a bit small for the Cape or the Gulf. Also a bit of an issue with the pop top perhaps due to the extra weight.
Another thought with the trailer is it would need to have good suspension to go up the Cape. Maybe Alko or similar independant rather than leaf as it may knock the boat around too much. Others on this forum would probably know a lot more than I do in this department.
Where do you store it Bill, on Maggie or do you leave it on that big island just west of Maggie?
I may have to give it a personal inspection when I'm in FNQ in a few weeks time.

The other half has one of these utes and the same colour would you believe, I had forgotten about that Bill, its at his dads.
He gets 17 litres per 100 klm or 16 miles to the gallon mate.
He also said to get better fuel economy, you need to change the diff ratio to 3.08:1 otherwise at 100 klms an hour it will scream its head off.

It has a high speed diff fited, or so the paperwork says, and seems to be revving slowly at 100ks per hr. I will fit a tacho to see what the revs are. I am quite happy with the setup, and will be midifying to suit my needs.Good fun playing your new toys , isn,t it.Its stored aat my house at Horseshoe bay on Magnetic is. Come and visit me if you want.

At the moment I am busily setting up & working on my new TUG, its nothing but the sounds of spinning spanners & the occassional curse :lol:
Modifying is what it is all about. You won't know yourself when tucking yourself into the sheets at night with all that extra comfort. I look forward to seeing it oneday.......especially if the fish are biting.
