Today I was enjoying a coffee with a couple of friends outside a Coffee Shop in Balnarring Vic. A Cop pulled in, as as he was walking into the Fish Shop he stopped and looked at a 4X4 parked outside. As he was doing this a bloke approached the vehicle and opened the door. the Cop 'very politely' called him to the front of the vehicle and again politely explained that the Goose Neck (with a tow ball attached) protruding from under the front bumper and the Rod holders on the Bull Bar were dangerous and illegal and must be removed. Well the bloke arced up no end. We sat there listening to his tirade on what cop should be doing and that the protrusions were not dangerous and that the cop shoudl mind his own business and get out and catch some real criminals. By this time the three of use were in hysterics. God only knows how the cop kept his cool and remained polite all the way through the tirade of bad, offensive and abusive language. After going on for a few minutes the Cop began writing in his big book and handed the bloke an 'On the Spot Fine' for the dangerous protrusions. At this point the bloke went ballistic and I nearly fell off my chair I was laughing so hard. After the bloke had nearly choked a couple of times the Cop walked around the vehicle and pointed out that the rear goose neck was also protruding in a dangerous manner and should also be removed. Well that was like waving a red flag at a bull. The Bloke went red in the face, started to shake, and I thought he was going to have a heart attack. By the look on the cops face I think he though the same. ballistic wasn't the word for his continued tirade. The cop then proceeded to place a 'Canary' on the blokes windscreen. Enough was enough, the bloke swore at the cop hopped into the vehicle and drove off while the cop was explaining that he would be charged on summons for a variety of offences. As he left the car park he drove straight out into the main road traffic without stopping. You guessed it, straight through a 'Stop' sign. The cop just shook his head and wrote in his book again. After we all finished laughing and wiping the tears from our eyes one of my friends called the cop over as he knew him. He told us all the bloke had to say in the beginning was "Yes Sir, I'll take them off today" and that would have been the end of the matter. As it now stands he will have to get a roadworthy for his vehicle the 'On the Spot Fine' will be withdrawn and he''ll be summonsed to appear in court on a large number various charges relation to the condition of the vehicle, failing to stop at a Stop sign, abusive language, offensive language, etc. etc. The cop explained that a lot of people are their own worst enemy and all he was trying to do was assist the driver and eliminate possible injuries that could be caused by the protrusions. Hell ! You still can't get the smile off my face. Hope you all had a day even half as good as mine. Cheers, Ozjohn.

I've met and had to deal with some very polite, supportive coppers over the years. Most are very compassionate, but become extremely intolerant when they are being attacked verbally and physically abused by some wanker. I've watched them prosecute some disrespectful delinquent in court, and then the kind-hearted Magistrate lets them off with a warning and a slap on the wrist, making the job even harder. We expect crimes to be punished, they catch the crooks, but then they don't get the punishment equivalent to the crime. Some do take the uniform to some imaginary, inflated power level and are bullies in their own right. They are certainly out there. It's probably the worst job in the world with the highest expectations from the community (peter public) with the most opposition from any law-breaker who gets caught, and the legal system doesn't comply. Who'd be a copper?

I haven't met an arsehole copper yet. All that I've met have been extremely courteous and helpful. It all depends on your attitude. If you are obeying the law and behaving yourself you don't have a problem. As far as 'revenue raising' goes - don't do the wrong thing and they can't revenue raise. The few speeding fines I've had have been all my own fault. I certainly don't blame 'revenue raising coppers' for my own mistakes. (and no - I am not a cop, nor are any members of my family). I have just been raised to respect them and not fear them.

There are so many inequalities in this world thet it is hard to comment on just a few like this . Why isn,t the copper out trying to stop some violent crime instead of walking aroung some poor blokes 4wd trying to find things to make money on. Lets face it most of these thing are only for the coppers to try to make money for the govt. They are , mostly, no safety hazard in any way, they just don,t meet EURO standards , and we are 12000 miles from Europe.I would rather be out in the deep bush than somewhere wher I can be making money for the Govt.Put someone in a uniform, and they think they are God.

On a wet day last month I was toddling along in the Patrol when a dear young thing in front of me had stopped in the middle of an intersection .. no break lights or blinkers when I saw her .. and started to turn right from the LH thru lane. Buggar, the old Patrol without EBS aquaplanned into the poor little Tidia ...
The Police officer who later attended, helped push her off the intersection, & had a quiet discussion with me. He suggested that he didn't want to have to decide who was at fault .. in which case he would have to 'breach' someone .. and indicated that of course that would probably be me. If she & I did not dispute who was at fault then he would treat it as a minor traffic incident & therefore no ticket.
My insurance has a $500 excess on all claims without a 'no blame - no claim' provision, so I had nothing to loose.
Good copper I thought.
Paid my $500 excess & got a new $1700 bullbar plus a bonus rear tail light cover that had been broken for years, from the nice repair shop guy.

If nobody is hurt they don't seem to bother too much, and it's between drivers and their insurance in Qld anyway. In Cairns had a run in with a little red hatchback and shortened i from the rear. I was clearly at fault, but no charges, no fine. Just the excess to have Rosy fixed. The Smart Bar wasn't damaged. Kinked but not damage and it restores its original shape. Coppers do have a job to do, often to protect people from themselves, and to protect us from those same people. As the copper told Ozjohn's mate, if the bloke had accepted the "advice" quietly, he could have gone on his way without all the paper work. The copper didn't deserve the mouthful for doing his job. It's a two-way street. Coppers with power surges, and nice coppers doing their job.

Those hot headed guys you see screaming abuse at the copper who was offering some quiet advise are probably the same ones who yell abuse at their wives and other motorists (roadrage) They just have a short fuse and need some anger management. It is always the other guys fault no matter what in their eyes.

We work with the cops at most jobs we go to and there are so many nice ones. You get the odd one you know is a jerk but I know a few of those in the fireys as well.
They jump in dragging hose or pushing cars or whatever job is there at the time. All our boys love the new regime of the "constable cuties" as they call the girls. Great girls, gutsy and tough and helpful.
A lot of these jobs are pretty ordinary as well and they do end up making you have a bad day. So you get a smart alec with the big mouth open and eventually something has to give. Its like the plebs behind the tape, I swear most times, its invisible because if you are behind the tape, you can't get a good look. The boundaries are pushed to the limit, then once told you will be arrested, the true colours come out.
I've had coppers physically stand in front of me at jobs, if they think things may get out of hand. We've been spat on, had things thrown at us, stuff stolen as we work and we have the easy job, these blokes cop (pun unintended) a lot of crap on most days. I wouldn't be one for quids, the works way too hard.
I guess also, with so many ex-coppers on this forum, it goes to show you, you never know who you are talking to on here, what they have done in their past lives etc. One of the great things about forums I suppose, you keep yourself private, unless you wish to share.

I agree completely Beachball, let's keep the Forum a pleasant place to be,not where people get there heckles up..
I think the big problem here is generalisation, I haven't wanted to comment on here but I don't like to see friends getting upset.
I personally admire the police force, sure you get good and bad people in there, but with some of the jobs they have to do they are worth far more than they get paid.
Also they are human and have good and bad days just like the rest of us...
This thread definately has a negative feel to it, C'mon guys, brighten up... Please....

Please....
