A little while back there was a topic on personal saftey/self defence while in you van/m home. The house hold type door saftey chain can be fitted to your van, house door opens inwards, your van outwards so just reverse the instalation of the saftey chain by mounting the chain to the door & the slide to a suitable location in the van.
I have set ours so the door has to be fully closed to remove the chain from the slide. Hope this may help some one.

G'day JC.
I think it is a great idea and I am having some fitted to my van.
I should have thanked you for the tip before now. Sorry 'bout that.
It's a very economical way of feeling safer.
Cheers. Pam.

What a great idea! Thanks JC. I have always worried about the fact that we have to open our caravan door right up if someone knocks on it.

very good idea, but I do not need it, I travel with Mrs W
second thoughts, I could use it when Mrs W is outside

Haven't you got an internal lock on your side door Marj ? Mine has. In fact, it took me a while to work out how to unlock it from the inside.
But I'm forgetting. You've got a different set-up.
Cheers,
Sheba.

Hi Sheba, I have a push down, pull up button lock. Thought the chain would give extra security.

You're right of course Marj. I was just thinking that I keep mine locked when inside, and I can speak to some-one outside the van, from the open side window at the back if necessary. Forgot you don't have one of them.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I probably should have clarified...
I am having mine fitted to the tailgate of the van....
Doesn't hurt to have a bit of extra protection.

As well as the door chain I came across a LED with a motion detector it has 8 LED's and is powered by 3 AA batteries . I intent to fit a couple under the awning one above the door and the other at the far end of the annex. Serves double purpose as a security and safety light when I need to head to the rest rooms in the wee hours .
Ordered mine off EBay for $1.00 plus $4.00 P$H or you can go tho Bunnings and get one similar for $13.50

I like the idea of the motion sensor light Wombat 280 - but my problem is if a light goes on I am awake - and even a cat walking past can trigger the sensor I think - but might investigate and get one for near the door of the van.

Not sure if you can adjust the sensitivity on the motion detector, will let you know when they get here . Mounting one above the door under the cover of the awning may prevent the the stray cat from activating it I think they may sense both heat and movement so you need both to fire it up. I suppose you could mount it on the door in the step well so when you leave or enter the van at night it lights the steps up I think the mere fact that a light comes on will give the low lifes something to think about.
