Hi All
Gary and I are just coming to the end of our 12 month trip around Aus. We have had a fantastic time and met many wonderful people. I have kept tuned into The Grey Nomad site along the way with my ipad.
Our focus for the trip was to see how many birds species we could photograph in a 12 month period. If any keen twitchers or photographers out there are interested, our journey and photographs can be seen on our blog

Like the bird blog, and yes I did know they were the feathered type before Vic or gubby says anything about it, but I must say I do like the other type.

Definitely interested. What beautiful photos of the birds. Wish I was that clever, I need a new camera, gotta blame something other than myself. I've only got a cheapy but will keep trying. Back to scroll through some more.

You have been to many of the places that we've been this year too, and I think I met you Garry in Katherine one evening... do you remember explaining that the bird who made such a maniacal noise after dark is a Blue-winged kookaburra?

Thank you for the great blog. I love watching birds and trying to identify them from my bird book. I describe the call of the blue-winged kookaburra as a s****** rather than the laugh of its bigger cousin. I never tire of watching birds, actually sitting quietly and watching their behaviour. We have a couple of colonies of miner birds here in this park. They have a conference call about 3 times a day when they call, congregate for the board meeting, compare notes, and disperse to their own departments. A bit like the public service. In the mean time the adults come to my site and others, check out all the spider webs for insects, get a beak full, take them to the nest, and then they come back for the webs for nesting material. They also found the coconute fibre in some hanging baskets. Clever little buggers. Getting clear photos is another skilll I haven't mastered. Don't feel bad HW. I know where you're coming from. Just watching the creatures of nature is always rewarding for me. I'm not sure that I know the "Quokka bird". Doesn't matter, I let that one go through to the keeper. I found a whole new perspective to life watching the creatures of the Kimberley to the Daintree, and everywhere I've been in between. Never get sick of it.

Cruising Granny Thanks for the positives on the blog. It has been such a journey. Our family and friends have followed our travels Quokka Birds? Yes miners are clever birds. When we were in Esperance we had one who kept attacking Gary, left me alone. They were nesting, nick named him Genghis! We are heading to The Glue Pot near Waikerie. Hope to photograph a black eared miner. Photography is a fickle thing. We get lots and lots of blurs! Digital photography is a great thing! Glenda

Just had another look at your link, fantastic spotting and shooting, love the descriptions as well.
Not the prettiest, but my favorites would have to be the Apostle Birds, I haven't seen any in WA though. Their antics and squabbling always give me a good laugh.
I was just trying to think of their nicknames, Larrikin Birds?

when you say zoom is that the maximum for that lens?
I use a Nikon D80
I do a lot of sim flying, that concorde is my latest aircraft, brought it 8 months ago but it would not install on my laptop, had to wait until I got my new super fast desktop system.

Yes Vic they are characters. Always brings a smile to us when we see them.
You have lots of babblers over here in the west that who also move in family groups and can be entertaining.
Also the western ringnecks ( 28 parrots) at Pemberton are always a pleasure.

Yes it is a nikkon lens, 80 to 400mm. Once you download photos you have a great capacity to zoom in. Depending on settings the photos can be many Mb and very high resolution. Tend to use jpg rather than raw.
Of course have to drop resolution to place on the blog.

May have to look at one of these 80-400 lenses when we go overseas, ie duty free.
That would fit a D80, wouldn't it?

Yes will fit the D80. Good idea to purchase duty free.
We bought camera and lenses in Japan a few years ago, before they had been released in Aus.
