Just heard on the news last night that the Cairns Council have decided to convert part of the land that the old Babinda sugar mill is on into free parking for grey nomads, they plan to put in a toilet block and will probably have a time limit on the length of time you can stay.................Well done Cairns Council

Ha Ha Wombat..........I worded that badly but you know what I mean
I think after the very recent closing of the mill the council are trying to bring in some much needed support for the town businesses to keep them afloat...

Babinda already has a great free spot, if the new one is as good everyone is on a winner. The old pub in Babinda is a great place also. I expected to see Chips Rafferty there.

This is really great news. Visit Cairns regularly, always looking for a reprieve from the high costs of parks. Glenda

Camped Overnight in the Showgrounds last time I was up there. At that time, no charge. About 2 years ago.
Cheerss,
Sheba.

If it's provided by the Cairns City Council I'd be suspicious about the "free" concept of anything. But I hope I'm wrong in the best interest of free campers.
