I'd hate seeing one in our caravan even worse!
What a nightmare, we thought the mouse plague in Autumn was bad enough.

If I thought there was one in there, would probably never go there again!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would sit on the roof of the van if I saw one, till someone else got rid of it!

We are currently in Birdsville, and have been dodging the plague since Longreach. We were originally told the plague was at Windorah, so we avoided there, and took the long way round through Winton, Boulia, Bedourie and now we are here.
Despite being a lot longer to travel, the road is way better, but there were still stories everywhere we camped of rats. At our camp at Boulia, there were footprints everywhere in the sand, but I think as we are travelling with "dog", they rats seem to stay clear of our van. We met some GNs in Bedourie who were camped near us in Boulia, and the rats has chewed through some wiring under his bonnet!
"dunmowin" finally in Birdsville

Gday...
I am currently in Winton and heading toward Boulia, should be there probably next Friday ...... sooooooo, these meeces/rats are/were at Boulia?? in the van park ?? .... or at free-camps??
Having a mouse around doesn't bother me too much ... except the damned damage they can do to wiring, or me tucker etc ...
I have not seen a single mouse either here at Winton, or anywhere up to here (I came in from Longreach)
Cheers
John

I would be worried about the rats getting at the wiring too, they can sniff around and get on their way but keep out of the van and away from anything I will need the next day, like wiring.

At least they're not the size of the White Tailed Rats of Cape York. They can grow to the size of small cats.
Cheers,
Sheba.
The guy who took the first one, described it as being "the size of a Possum, scary."

John, we have not seen any rats, only heard second hand. At Boulia, we were at the free camp between racecourse & river, beautiful spot, but try to stay high - close to the racetrack fence. As I said earlier, we have a dog who sleeps outside, I believe this may discourage the little rodents. (PS, good fishing)
They are selling rat glue boards here in birdsville caravan park, the cabins have steel wool at the steps - just a couple of suggestions. Another hint was to keep the bonnet of your engine open at night to allow your vehicle to cool down - the rats look for warm places to make their nests.
By the way, absolutely a beautiful drive from Winton to Boulia - bitumen most of the way with a few Km of road works.

Jules you were lucky not to be traveling in outback SA or western NSW a couple of months ago.
The little beasties (mice) were running rampant all over the place. Wall to wall carpet of mice comes to mind.
You'd see them running across the road in the middle of the day.

Jimricho - been known to sit on the table for hours, waiting for John to come and rescue me when there was a mouse in the kitchen. Took the stairs to my bedroom in two strides one day when mouse ran over my foot!!!!! (And I have very sort legs!!)
Hate those horrible things, mice and rats both.
If there is a mouse plage here like they had few years ago - I'm moving out!!!!!

Spray the wires with WD40 and the rats wont go near them. Also use some camfour flakes under the bed etc and they stay away. Thats how I got rid of one in Victoria earlier in the year. I also opened the boot and then wnet in under the bed from ind-side so that may have given him the message
Regards Brian

I can't breath when there's camphor around. Luckily no rats here.

My Japanese s-i-l is rat/mouse phobic,,I mean really phobic!
A few years ago, my brother took her out west to a family property, where they stayed in the shearers quarters, with the septic loo is out in the yard. Someone unwittingly said there'd been a few mice around. She wouldn't use that loo! She'd drive into town about 30km away!
