It has been a long time since I lived in Tassy and things must of changed. My daughter and her partner are going to Tas for a conference and intend doing a motor home hire thing and travel from Launceston to Hobart. They only have four days and they want to follow a sea food trail and free camp. I would suggest the east coast. Are there any suggestions please

go the east coast, the further south may see availbity improve, try stopping at the locals wharfs and you my be able to buy fresh cheers blaze

From Launceston I would not advise going via the Sideling to Scottsdale, or for that matter going to St Helens that way at all in a motorhome. A campervan yes, we have done it with our caravan but we lived in the NE for many years and know the road.
Bridport and St Helens are good seafood places but expensive.
From Launceston take the Midland Highway to Campbelltown then cut across the lakes towards Bicheno.
Good seafood available at Bicheno, plus a very good C/Pk behind the police station.
Triabunna is another good place for seafood, but again not cheap. Especially for a fishing port.
Next place Hobart. Constitution Dock fishmongers. Don't want to get ripped off? Continue down to Margate and buy there.
Of course, all this is relevant, if you are used to paying high prices then it will appear cheap over here.
We just happen to know where to go.

All comes down to definitions?
To me, a camper van is one of those "whizz bang, side door things" like a courier van.
A motor home is a 3tonne truck or larger Winnebago style.
If you where to drive both of these across from Launceston to St Helens via Welborough, I can bet I know which one you won't do it again in.

Loads of free camping in Tassie....if you aren't willing to go via the Sideling (and really it's not THAT bad!)there is the route thru' Lilydale to Scottsdale, it is pretty much impossible to avoid narrow, winding and steep roads in Tassie unless you don't venture off the Midlands Highway. If travelling down thru' the Midlands then Campbelltown has free camping near the river and also Red Bridge Cafe near the camping area on the southern side of town has some yummy stuff...they sell gourmet grocery items as well as sit down eating. I have been back in Tassie for 8 months and have yet to have decent take away fish & chips...I bought fish & chips at Constitution Dock and it was inedible! The upmarket & fresh food is great in Tassie but run of the mill takeaway food is abysmal, Tassie really needs to lift its' game in this regard. The farmers market in Hobart on Sundays is well worth a look..some really nice food there, I don't like Salamanca market...too crowded, too 'touristy' and too much cheap crap that you see in every market on the planet. Pack your woolies..it's still freezing cold here (I AM a Queenslander!!) and have fun!

Skip the East Coast if they are in something bigger than a Hiace - Elephant Pass is a nightmare at the best of times, even when you re used to it. Go the Midlands Highway, stop off at Richmond (free camping in the middle of town). Head to Hobart, and then toddle off down the Huon for a day or so.

Dont know why all the negitive comments about the east coast roads, windy, scenic, breathtaking beautiful in place, sheer drops beside the road with hair pin corners but I towed a 20 foot boat up and down those roads quite a number of times a year during the game fishing season, as did many others. I also believe a glass boat of that size is heavier than a van of simular lenths. Now if you are in a real hurry to get there, get a motorbike because they are known australia wide as some of the best rides to go on, now if you are touring and enjoying the journey, take your time. The roads airnt that bad, the destination is worth it. cheers blaze
