Coming down a hill in a two lane road today I saw a camera flash from the rear of a van facing me on a road verge. I was within the speed limit but a car overtaking me in the other lane must have been speeding.
Previously speed camera's have been on the ground with the operator in a nearby vehicle, however many camera's have been damaged and operators assaulted by irate motorists, so this looks like it might be a solution for the safety of the operator and the camera.
The van was a late model VW with a heavily tinted rear window and no doubt with the doors locked for safety. This is the first time I have seen these in use.
Please note this post is not for or against speed camera's just advising of a new method of using them in WA.

I haven't seen there over here in the vehicles before Marj, only on the ground, I was a bit surpised when I saw the flash of the camera. We have the fixed camera's in camera boxes at some of the traffic light intersections too.
I just hope it wasn't me they flashed (I was nearest the camera), I was doing just below 60 in a 60 mph zone, maybe they had just set up and were testing it before they started?

Here in Brissy they have them in old cars on the side of the road. They are ordinary, unmarked cars that look like they have broken down and been left there.

Keep your eyes peeled in Vic, Vic THE MAJORITY OF OUR MOBIL CAMERAS are mounted on the front of the vehicle, very hard to spot, they look like a small narrow Solar Panel
and they are also Infra red so they can get you in the dark , The Victorian Gov't even puts the EXPECTED revenue into the forecast budget figures That's how much faith they put on the revenue coll, ''OOPS '' safety camera's I think the box in front of car type are now Obsolete in Victoria
About three years ago they released a breakdown of the broken speed limits and the amount of revenue collected, 70% of the revenue was collected from motorists exceeding the speed limit by Less than 15 Klm per hour. and most of them were doing under 10 Klm over the speed limit BUT !! Its Not revenue raising LOL, ????

Vic, a couple of years back I had the same thing happen in Whitfords Avenue. I was under limit, hoon overtaking me set off the camera. Never got a ticket. I gather the camera can tell which vehicle was speeding. Would have been a bit peed off if I had been nicked. Cheers, Tony

Over here in S.A. they shoot over 8 lanes. 4 lanes going 4 lanes coming towards them. Got you speeding coming & going. It picks out which vehicle is speeding.

The trick is not to speed to bugger up their revenue raising tactics. They claim the cameras are to encourage us to drive within the speed limit to save lives on the road. That tactic isn't working, but the revenue is surely rising. Mongrels!

That is damned stupid of the Queensland government.
There will be the impression created that police and other government inspectors might use older cars, which destroys one of the protections the public had against imposters who might accost them on the road - that police and other authorised staff would always be in latest model vehicles. It is bad enough that unmarked police Q cars can be tarted up, 'unusual' vehicles (for police). How do children waiting at bus stops and lone women drivers protect themselves these days when traffic police disguises put them more at risk of assault and abduction from police imposters in vehicles?

Maybe I didn't explain properly, Johng. The cars are parked on the side of highways and major roads and unmanned. So when you're driving and see a car on the side, you don't know if it's a genuine broken down car or a camera car.

'tis true, and a few new additions are "tradies"utes with the camera near the tow bar, or how about a surfer's car complete with surfboard!

Now, I am a supporter of speed cameras..... don't stone me. I drive within the speed limit, because I don't have money to waste on a speeding fine. Don't get me wrong, I like driving and like getting ahead of the mob, and feeling a good car set free on the highway, but I pull it in because I'm a miser!
Sure, its a money raiser, which is why it works for me.
I worked with some one once who got a ticket in the mail every day for over a week, until she realised she was passing a new camera every day on her way to work. She was really angry. Me, I thought that it showed habitual speeding, and she earned those fines. She argued that it was unfair- the camera was on a hill, and everyone knows you have to go fast up a hill !
Yes, I have had a speeding fine, once, coming from a 90 zone down to 60, but it was school time, so it was really down to 40, and I wasn't thinking of the time..... who's fault? Mine.

Thanks Dazren, don't think I will be driving in Victoria for awhile, but who knows!
I am not a goody goody, and in my 52 years of driving have never had a speeding ticket, but more to do with not wanting a fine or losing demerit points, so for me speed camera's do work (makes me think about my speeding). I do think those that speed excessively deserve to be caught.
The camera I saw yesterday was at the bottom of a hill, I do think that is a bit deceptive as most cars will gain speed and in traffic it is not always safe to apply your brakes if someone is behind you.

Yes, and sometimes parked on the median strip. I got done on the Ipswich Toowomba "Motorway" in the 80K zone at Plainland (I think that's where it was). I honestly didn't see the speed sign, and dind't expect to have an 80Km zone on a "Motorway". Ah well, that's Queensland for you..... lol

Yeah Vic, I have been booked 3 times in the last 6 years [ I do 70000 + Klms a year ]
1 for doing 85 k in an 80 zone, and 2 for doing 64 k in a 60 zone, when you do that many klm a year, it does not take much to creep slightly over the speed limit at times.
If i commit another one maybe i should be Hung, Drawn, and Quartered, seeing as i am such a bad citizen, i have a brother in the force, and he used to be based in a notorious Low Economic area of geelong, where about 40% of the drivers are unlicensed, and their cars are unregistered, and uninsured, police do not concentrate on them any more because, the courts just let them off, with community based orders etc, and they don't bother paying the fines anyway But ''Mr Citizen'' drive past a speed camera, and look-out '' you criminal''

Yes, the law can be an ass sometimes, once they used to give you a bit of lee way, but I don't think they do that anymore.
My good driving "record" is not so much from never speeding on occasions (deliberate or otherwise) but touch wood not being caught yet.
I don't know how on country roads you can overtake someone travelling slow below the speed limit without speeding sometimes to get past them. It's sometimes better to get past them as fast as you can and back on your side of the road than to do a slow overtake on the wrong side of the road, not all roads lend themselves to long stretches to overtake (if there are no cars in them)......

Hi all
If travelling in Queensland, listen in on the uhf radio. The truckies call them "Flash ForCash" which just about sums the whole revenue raising purpose of the cameras. They even pinch us for flashing oncoming rigs to warn of the flash for cash cars, utes, Land Cruisers, Patrols etc that are now being used. Anywhere on the Bruce Highway you can expect them from Brisbane to Cairns.
