we are concidering selling up and becoming full time nomads (10 years or so), however we dont know how we can get around NSW Rego requirements where you must have a fixed address for rego and lic, we dont have any family in Australia or any close friends.
Anyone have some ideas what to do ????

I would suggest you register in Vic, or WA. much cheaper for van and no annuall inspection for van . not sure about vic but in WA no annuall inspection for tug either and we have used an adress of our daughter in nsw as postal adress and all our renewals etc. are sent there. we used an adress of people we sat for in WA as residence (with their blessing) but everything is sent to postal adress. This postal adress could be a forwarding agent or a neighbour or just a post box

Just off the top of my head, there is a law that you can tap into
NFA which means No Fixed Abode.

How do backpackers and other overseas travellers get on when they come over here, buy a van to travel and have to register it?

Hi Brian,
Take a holiday to South Australia (in particular to Berri, near Renmark) and stay at the c/park for a week. Walk to the SA Service Centre in town with your current rego, ID, c/park receipt, fill in a form and pay your money. No inspections required (which I don't entirely agree with, but!!!) and you will save money as well.
I did it a few months ago for the same reason as you and use my son's address in NSW as our postal address to receive the renewal notice.

Neil..we are NSW residents and use a PO Box address for all utilities including car regos and so far no problems, the only hassle is that you will need to have the vehicles given a safety check each year in NSW or some other locatiion acceptable to RTA of NSW.
Must say I`ve found them to be very helpful and will pre-registered up to 90 days ahead of the due date....would suggest you give them a ring for advice.
VicRoads are the best and for all the reasons mentioned above, so would recommend a change...if you want a heads up send me a PM on some options.

When we hit the road The RTA said " you must have a residential address ( We use our daughters) to have a drivers lic' " this gives them someplace to start incase of unpaid fines or accidents. The same goes for Rego.
I don't doubt what you say, it just proves the RTA can't even run their own show.
As for pink slips the last two I got were in QLD and NT no probs there.
I will definately ring them tomorrow

I used my daughter's letter box postal address for the entire time I was on the road. I provided pre-paid postal bags and she'd pack up my mail every 2 or 3 weeks and forward. I receive most of my mail and updates online these days, so I don't get much snail mail anymore. If you're a resident of a caravan park it's accepted in SA, WA and Qld. I've done it since 1998. A caravan park is accepted as a residential address these days. I have WA rego on my vehicle but I left in 07, travelled for 12 months, parked up in Cairns for 2 years. They don't hassle me because I'm itinerant with no fixed address, but I'm currently parked up in SA. You will receive your renewal online. SA and WA don't have rego stickers anymore, and don't do inspections every year.

Neil...I think the point you raise is correct and is that we do own property in NSW and therefore the postal address didn`t pose a problem for the RTA.

Change to VIC like everybody else does. Van rego in NSW $460 in $VIC 37.30 car rego around $200 cheaper VIC. Getting inspections interstate and sending back to NSW to meet requirements total pain. If you don't have friends in VIC get some or rent post box as still heaps cheaper than paying NSW van rego.

I changed everything to SA. just used a caravan receipt and paid over the counter. Even changed my drivers license free and I only paid for an extra 5 years. Changed from QLD and saved about $600 dollars I think and just re register over the net now.
