Gday...
Fully appreciate that 'snopes' website shows it is a bit of a furphy - but I speak from experience.
Driving from Castlemaine to Daylesford in Victoria nine years ago I saw a vehicle stopped on the side of the road, bonnet up, lady standing beside and she waved - asking for assistance.
So I did the 'smart' thing - slowed down, drove a bit past, put the car into reverse (for the lights to show the car and lady I had passed), it all seemed OK, so I reversed back to the lady and the car.
I got out and walked toward her, asking what the problem was. Next thing, three blokes came out of the bush and gave me a fair thumping, left me on the ground and when I regained some sense I realised my car was gone and the lady and her car.
I flagged down another vehicle, took me to Daylesford and I reported it to police. My vehicle was found in Bendigo two days later and all my stuff had been taken out of it, stereo taken out, driving lights removed etc. Car was not damaged but I was missing stuff - and feeling really unwell and somewhat annoyed.
So - even though the "baby carrier with blanket" may be a furphy - I NEVER stop of a night to assist ANYONE these days. I take note of vehicle, person, circumstances etc and report it to police in next town - let them worry about it.
Cheers
John

I am pretty much the same John and I have to say it is a bit sad that we as a people have come to this in order to protect ourselves.
Disappointing that you had to endure such a nasty bashing, personal attack and theft of property etc when trying to assist someone you thought was in distress.
Unfortunately I think it is all going to get worse with time as well.

Yes Folks you're right! It's another attempt at using this forum to spread alarmist and misleading information.
It took me less than 10 seconds to do a google search to establish this.
Those who (mis)use the forum for this purpose have never heard the fable of the boy who cried wolf.

There is a real warning out, however. Its for the Gloucester/Barrington Tops area.
The police are blitzing the area looking for a bloke who has been hiding there after possibly 2 murders.
Naden search prompts tourist warning
Gloucester Mayor Geoff Slack is urging holiday-makers to take care, as the search for fugitive Malcolm Naden shifts to dense terrain in the Barrington Tops, north of Newcastle.
38-year-old Naden has been on the run for six years and is wanted over the alleged murder of a woman, and the disappearance of another in Dubbo.
He is also accused of shooting a police officer near his make-shift campsite near Nowendoc, as the search closed in two weeks ago.
The command post has now moved to Gloucester and Councillor Slack says people need to be cautious.
"We as usual are expecting quite a lot of people to come up over the holiday period to the beautiful Barrington Tops and the Gloucester Tops," he said.
"We just ask people to be careful, keep an eye out, try not to come up on your own.
"A little group is probably better and if you do see something suspicious please report it immediately to the police."
Councillor Slack says Naden's already been blamed for several local robberies.
"The reports have been coming probably for a couple of years now that somebody and they suspect that it is him has been helping himself to some isolated properties to food, sleeping bags and that sort of thing.
"Yes, he's been in the area for three or four years now and hopefully they'll find him."

After reading Rip and Rosie's post I rest my case about the boy that cried wolf. The Naden search story is very real and has had quite a bit of media attention and for good reason. This is very much a genuine warning to anyone travelling the Thunderbolts Way.
When people use emails or forums to spread misinformation it dilutes the value of genuine information such as that in Rip and Rosie's post.

Jimbo, firearms are not the answer. I was speaking with a little jockingly regarding the baseball bat in my post above......
Our answer to these issues...if they occur....is common sense.
And to date, twice around AUS with MANY MANY other trips, one being to Perth and back to Sydney...I have NEVER had an issue where a weapon would need to be used.
We are in the luckiest country in the world. Learn to enjoy and don't be paranoid out there is my answer

Jimbo, I'm with you, with one small adjustment. Drop the .38, which is a bit small. A .357 magnum stops scrotes far more effectively, and at longer ranges. Has a good effect on vehicles, too. The engine blocks are never the same again. Yeah, they kick a bit, but use the double-handed grip and all will be well (not at the receiving end!). Cheers, Tony

All we need is dirty harry to come on the trips with us. I reckon it would be classic to say"Come on- make my day" to some slimebag as you whip out your .44 magnum. When in doubt, don,t stop.If you camp with lots of people, you are usually safe. I am also military trained, and carry a hardwood hammer handle under the front seat, and I don,t pick up hitchhikers. Come on guys, this is Australia, not the USA.
I carried a gun for 27 years and only had to take it out of its holster ONCE. And I worked in some pretty bad areas ....I was also a weapons instructor for 15 years, with Glocks, .38, Heckler & Koch Machine guns, AR 15's, shotguns etc...
I think we should get off this bit about using weapons against an "alleged" bad guy as this is very silly stuff. Guns don't kill people....PEOPLE kill people and with talk like this I can see why. Very sad.
My last bit on this subject as it is getting like another forum............which I hope does NOT happen.
