What are you doing there? Its a aboriginal settlement , about 50k north of townsville. high unemployment, high crime,a lot of alchahol related violence.A lovely island, but the natives are restless.I wouldn,t go there for work unless paid quite substantialy.Sorry, Bill

Gday...
Gee thanks bill12 ..... the website I provided gives a very broad, informed coverage of the Island and its history and failings so Lily31 could then have formed her own opinion.
Not quite as blunt as your 'fear generating' description - albeit you are fairly accurate.
Cheers

I didn,t post to put fear in anybody, just to state the facts. I have worked on Palm, and had some fairly negative experiences. The contractors live in razor wire compounds, because of theft. The majority of locals are great people, and the island is beautiful, but It definately has problems.Bill

Lilly, We spent a short time working in Doomadgee community, in the Gulf country, some years ago. I believe that Palm Island is similar, except it gets more publicity, as it is not as remote as Doom. Alcohol problems, violence. The house we were provided with was in the general community, not a compound. There was a party house over the road. At weekends, we used to go out of town in order to get a decent night's sleep. In town, we never got to sleep the night through, due to noise from people, brawling dogs, emergency flights in by the Flying Doc (we were near the airstrip). I did not feel safe enough to walk anywhere alone. Definitely check out your proposed accommodation before you take the job - for security, proximity to noise sources. I have worked catering in remote areas. Might be an idea to check out the regularity of supplies to the island, how you would order, etc, any limitations on types of supplies. We stayed a month at Forrest Beach, a couple of years ago. This is across from Palm Island, on the mainland. There is a hotel at the campground and it did a regular trade with Palm Islanders who came across in their tinnies to buy grog.
